Latin American Literature Kelvin L. The literary father of modernism was Ruben Dario, his author name is Felix Ruben Garcia Sarmiento. The most important writers during modernism were poets. Ruben Dario believed that poetry should avoid sending messages; and instead, try to attain the beauty of poetry in its best or purest form while also having verses of traditional style! His books: " Profane Hymns Other Poems , and Songs of Life and Hope," are all literature at when modernism was at its height. University of Kansas Itself a post-structuralist text that "takes risks" with wordplay, McGuirk’s study proposes to employ "strategies which open up symptomatic differences not only between but also within cultures" (xii). Symptomatic of post-structuralism, difference lies within the text, McGuirk argues, and as with Latin American culture, Latin American literature always already deconstructs its own discursive constructs of difference. This approach thus collapses the gap between theory and literature to show that Latin American texts symptomatically perform post-structuralist practices by "resist[ing] reductivist binarisms and polarities" (29). To prove his point, McGuirk offers a variety of different, and at times divergent, post-structural readings of Latin American poetry, short fiction, and narratives. modernismo as an institutional category of literary history. He continues with Darío and Vallejo by examining their intertextual anxiety of influence "to show how poetic influence works

This course is available in two versions, with the texts read in English or Spanish. The two versions are identical except for a minor variation in the exam at the end of the year, when students doing Latin American Literature II will be expected to answer a compulsory question commenting on an extract from a Spanish text.
We begin by looking at some of the better known twentieth-century texts - Borges, Carpentier, GarcÚa Marquez - using both original Spanish versions and translations. The second term begins with Paz's Labyrinth of Solitude and a clutch of Mexican texts that can be related to it. The idea is to get some sense of the continuity of a tradition. In addition to the prose works attention will also be paid to poetry - specifically to the early work of Neruda beginning with his love poetry, moving through to his great poem about Macchu Picchu.

Among other prizes, he has received the Premio Municipal de Poesía, one of the most prestigious literary awards of Chile. The critic Hernán Días Arrieta (known as "Alone") said of his writing: "You feel that you are in the middle of a jungle, in the good company of invisible voices - modern, classical, archaic and revolutionary - always in lush foliage and deep terrain."
He left his country in the early 1980's, during the political repression there, and has since lived in the United States. Working far from the spotlight of public life, dedicating himself to his artistic endeavors, he has become a mythical figure in the world of Latin American letters.
