Part II Paper Sp. 12 Reading List This paper has a Learning Support Web Site at www.mml.cam.ac.uk/Spanish/SP12/ Latin-American Literature [NB This is a different paper from Part Ib SP5, and can be taken by students who took that paper or by students with no prior knowledge of Latin American literature] Modern literature from Latin America is rich and exciting. In it many strands of European thought and art converge and develop as they face a new reality. The subcontinent is a region which faces an urgent and dramatic political struggle, with a vast range of often hostile natural environments, with three main races coexisting or mingling to form new cultures. This paper leads on well from the Part IB topics in Latin-American Culture and History (Paper Sp. 5), in that these papers provide useful background whilst covering different texts and topics, although it is perfectly possible to take the Part II paper on its own. The course will give you an insight into the cultures of different countries throughout an entire subcontinent and is virtually unique amongst the papers offered in the Faculty of Modern Languages in the fact that it provides a non-Eurocentric perspective on literature and culture, and allows you to study a selection of some of the most exciting world literature written this century.

Prior to 1945, Mexican and Latin American poetry, drama, and music were acquired regularly by the Harris Collection. At that time, Latin American and Mexican acquisitions were effectively curtailed, although some titles were sporadically added. In 1975, formal acquisitions by purchase for Latin American and Mexican materials for the Harris Collection ceased. Some small additions by gift continue to be made.
However, Chicana/o and Puerto Rican poetry, drama, and music are still actively collected. Since many authors may move between regions and cultures, acquisitions decisions are based primarily on an evaluation of the writer's identification, rather than legal citizenship or residence. The existence of publishers that specifically concentrate in this material, such as Arte Publico and Bilingual Review Press helps in the identification of authors to be included in the Collection.
There are approximately 3,500 titles of Latin American, Chicana/o, and Puerto Rican literature in the Harris Collection. Older materials (primarily prior to 1945) may be found in the

LT310: Latin American Literature in Translation (No Spanish language requirement) Thursday 12:00-14:00, Room 5A.118
    David Musselwhite
The course is intended to introduce students who have no Spanish to some of the major writers of the Latin American tradition beginning with the Argentinian Borges who is possibly one of the most influential of all twentieth-century prose writers and the Cuban Carpentier whose "invention" of "magical realism" has set the agenda for much subsequent Latin American and post-colonial writing. Perhaps the greatest practitioner of this "magical realism" is the Colombian García Márquez and his One Hundred Years of Solitude is possibly the most influential novel of the second half of the last century. In Isabel Allende’s best-selling The House of the Spirits it is possible already to see the magical realist tradition in crisis faced by the brutal political context of the late seventies and eighties and in Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate it is possible to suspect that magical realism has itself become kitsch and formulaic.

NOTE: With the exception of Borges where the convenience of the English anthology justifies using the translation and Carpentier’s El reino de este mundo/The Kingdom of this World and where it is almost impossible to get hold of the Spanish text, all the material on this course will be read in Spanish: the translations cited are for students still nervous of committing themselves to work in Spanish but the ambition is that by the end of the year even those students will be reading the texts in the original language. The examination at the end of the year will have a compulsory question requiring a critical reading of a passage in Spanish The course is designed to introduce students doing Latin American Studies to a number of the better known writers of Spanish American poetry and prose. The course begins by looking at the work of the Argentinian Borges and the Cuban Alejo Capentier both of whom are commonly regarded as major progenitors of the so-called "boom" of Latin American writing in the sixties and early seventies. The essays of both writers, as well as the short stories of the one and the novels of the other, played a large part in establishing the terms in which Latin American literature is frequently discussed: Borges on the constituents of a Latin American identity and Carpentier on the peculiar "magical realism" evoked by considering the history and the geography of the continent. To a certain extent it might be said that the "boom" climaxed in García Márquez great Colombian novel

The Anthropological Imagination in Latin American Literature exemplifies the sort of cultural studies approach that one is firmly committed to emphasizing in the study of Latin American literature. I know of no other book that approaches contemporary Latin American narrative in this fashion. It is truly a model study."David William Foster Emery develops the concept of an "anthropological imagination"that is, the conjunction of anthropology and literature in twentieth-century Latin American literary texts. While exploring the uses of anthropology in contemporary narrative and fiction, Emery also gives consideration to documentary and testimonial writings. The major focus of this engaging work is the study of the novel. Analyzing fictions by authors from Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, and Peru, Emery covers a wide geographical region, as well as a diverse group of topics. Subjects such as surrealist primitivism, the testimonio
