Students in foreign language classes learn how to communicate, both culturally and linguistically, with speakers of languages other than English. As they learn about other languages and cultures, students also expand their knowledge of their native language and see their culture from another viewpoint.

We offer courses for transfer, for enrichment, and for professional purposes.
Transfer courses are offered every year in
Conversational courses for enrichment are also regularly offered in Spanish. In addition, a course for medical professionals is offered in Spanish, and Cultures Studies courses that involve travel are offered to various countries.

Quick Links Millsaps Home Directory Search Visitors Events Catalog Library Modern Languages General Information Requirements for Major: Students may complete a major in French, German, or Spanish by satisfying the language requirement and completing successfully 2110 and a minimum of five courses beyond 2110. At least two of the five courses beyond 2110 must be literature courses taken at Millsaps. For the German major, two of the five courses beyond 2110 must be taken at another institution, after approval from the department chair. For all majors, no more than three language courses taken at another institution may be counted towards the major, and of those three, no more than two may be beyond the intermediate level.
Requirements for Minor: Students may elect a minor in French, German, or Spanish by satisfying the language requirement and completing successfully 2110 and a minimum of two courses beyond it. At least one of the two courses beyond 2110 must be a literature course. All courses beyond the intermediate level must be taken at Millsaps.

    The University of Helsinki Language Corpus Server
    (UHLCS) is a multilingual databank and data server located at the Department of General Linguistics, the University of Helsinki. The UHLCS, which is maintained by the University of Helsinki, was founded late in 1980. At present, the UHLCS contains computer corpora of more than 50 languages , including samples of minority languages and extensive corpora representing different text types. In 2000, the corpora of the Uralic, Turkic, Tungusic, Mongolic, Palaeo-Siberian, Iranian and Caucasian languages were edited for public use with the financial support of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig. There are also tools at the UHLCS that can be used in analyzing the corpora. The use of the corpora and the software at the UHLCS is restricted for research and teaching. visitors since August 1, 2002.
