The Persian Gulf
By Kevin Filan Kuwait Bahrain Kuwait Oman Qatar ... Yemen Amidst the ancient kingdoms of Arabia, Kuwait is a comparative newcomer. Its history dates from 1710, when a group of Arabian immigrants pitched their tents and built a fort on the marshy headland that would later become Kuwait City. Their strategic location helped ensure continuing growth; by 1760 the settlement had become a walled city, with a fleet of 800 ships and camel caravans which travelled regularly to Baghdad and Damascus. All this development took place under the watchful eye of the Al-Sabah clan, who by 1756 had become the rulers of the principality.
This did not sit well with the newly founded Kingdom of Iraq, which considered Kuwait to be part of the Al-Basrah region and which also wanted Kuwait's deep-water port and easy access to the Persian Gulf. However, there was little they could do against the British Army. In exchange for recognition by the League of Nations, in 1932 the Iraqi government recognized the current border between Kuwait and Iraq. This continued to be a major source of contention within Iraq, particularly when vast oil reserves were discovered in the area. When the British left Kuwait in 1961, Iraq once again reasserted its claim to Kuwait. The Iraqi Army mobilized at the borders, preparing to invade, but were stopped when the British sent troops back into the region. After this relations between the two countries improved, particularly when Kuwait funded Iraq's military buildup during the long and bloody Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988.

The capital is Kuwait. It is a sandy and barren country. With more than 10% of the world's estimated oil reserves, Kuwait is a leading exporter of petroleum and has used some of the enormous profits for social improvements. In the 1960s the government launched a program of industrial diversification, successfully introducing oil refining and production of natural gas and fertilizers. The population is predominantly Arab and Sunni Muslim, although only half the inhabitants are native-born. History
In the war’s wake, Kuwait concentrated on restoring its oil industry and on rebuilding the country. Parliamentary elections in 1992 resulted in the victory of a majority of the opposition candidates, but despite promises of democratic reform, the al Sabah family continued to dominate the government. In Oct., 1994, Iraq massed elite troops along the border with Kuwait, but it removed them when Kuwait and the United States moved forces into the area. Parliament was dissolved by the sheikh in May, 1999; new elections held in July gave Islamist and liberal candidates the most seats. Also in 1999, the sheikh issued an edict giving Kuwaiti women the right to vote and to run for office, but parliament failed to ratify it.

Kuwait Arab culture capital
Kuwait City has been selected as the Arab Cultural Capital for the year 2001. The year-long cultural programme to mark this occasion were flagged off by the Emir of Kuwait on 6 January. The programme will aim at highlighting Kuwait’s distinct culture and arts and crafts and showcasing them for foreign visitors throughout the year. An opera will present the cultural history of Kuwait in an artistic way. Seminars on Arab culture and translation will be held as part of this programme.
Kuwait has offered great services to Arab literature and culture. Al-Arabi magazine stands out as the most important cultural periodical of the Arab World. Kuwait has also taken care to enrich Arabic literature by translating thousands of works into Arabic from various languages on a vast variety of subjects.

Kuwait City successfully balances two worlds - that of Arab traditional life and modern Western influences. Here, the city's oldest monument, the Seif Palace , and its most dominant new landmark, the Swedish designed Kuwait Towers , are just two contrasting examples of a city that looks to the future whilst remaining true to the cultural origins of its people.
Art and Culture
The Kuwaiti government places considerable value on the country's heritage and therefore much emphasis is placed on museums and cultural foundations. When the National Museum's treasures of Islamic art were lost in the occupation of 1991, the collection in the Taraq Rajab Museum became all the more important.
Sadu House is both museum and cultural foundation housing Bedouin arts and crafts such as weaving, as well as selling Bedouin items. In addition to its artefacts, the building itself is of particular interest for its construction in gypsum and coral, and the ornate carvings that line the courtyard.

Travel Center Country Guide: KUWAIT Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Decision Making Women Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES DECISION MAKING Prior appointments are always required and visitors are expected to arrive on time; tardiness is considered an insult in this tiny country. It is discouraged to arrange meetings in the mornings. Meetings after 6p.m. are preferred. Summer meetings are also discouraged. Many people go on holiday during July and August. Meetings generally progress slowly, with personal discussions and many cups of coffee preceding any talk of business. Do not inquire of a Kuwaiti's family, as it represents overly personal discussion. Discussion of politics is also not encouraged. One may not actually discuss business until the next day, in which case you will be reinvted after initial contact. Do not press any issues. Decisions are made quickly and seemingly spontaneously. The foreign businessperson in Kuwait must be ready and able to conclude a deal. WOMEN Kuwait is probably the only country in the Gulf States where women hold any significant positions in business and government. As in the other Arab countries, however, men and women still lead restricted and segregated social lives. In general, it is not wise to send a woman to conduct business, even in Kuwait as her effectiveness will most probably be hampered.
