Education in Kuwait
  • The history of education in Kuwait Education in Kuwait today Higher education in Kuwait The History of Education in Kuwait The development of the Kuwaiti educational system can be largely attributed to the wealth that oil has brought to the country. At the turn of the 20 th The government took control of education in 1939 and had begun 17 schools by 1945. As oil production picked up in the post-World War II era, the government began investing large sums of money into social services, and education was one of its top priorities. By 1960, there were about 45,000 students enrolled in the Kuwaiti educational system, including 18,000 girls. Back to top Education in Kuwait today Many Kuwaitis choose not to send their children to government schools but, rather, enroll them in private schools. There are numerous private schools in Kuwait, many of which have foreign sponsors and are co-ed. The Bayan Bilingual School, the American School of Kuwait, the American International School, the British School of Kuwait, and the French School are several of the many prestigious private schools available to the Kuwaiti population.

KUWAIT IN THE PAST
](History in brief)
K uwait was never a colony and the Kuwaitis have always been free to manage their affairs among themselves as they see fit and develop their unique cultural characteristics in their own way. The Kuwaiti of the pre-oil era survived, in the harshness of the desert or sea, through a mix of finely honed skills and highly developed social organization based on family, can and tribe, which provided the economic and political support necessary for survival. In return for this support, the individual gave unquestioning service and loyalty to his group. This gave rise to clan –based networks, which are still extremely strong and provide the basis of social relations between Kuwaitis today.
The Kuwaiti child was taught from an early age to serve and protect older family members and also, to ensure cooperation between clans, not to embarrass the family, The degree, which a young Kuwaiti was successful in learning his role was reflected in the amount of (face), he earned. The concept of face has the same meaning as respect and reputation in the west, except the face has intensity about it that is almost inconceivable to a westerner. But face accrues not only to the individual but also to the group, and a youth is considered mature once he view personal success as being synonymous with the success of the family or group.
Face is expressed through hospitality, generosity and loyalty to family or particular group. A Kuwaiti spends his life building his personal and social face and the sense of face lies behind many social behaviors in Kuwait.

Culture
In Arabic, islam means submission and a muslim is one who submits to Allah's will. Kuwait's brand of Islam is not as strict as Saudi Arabia's, but the country isn't exactly liberal. The essence of Islam is the belief that there is only one god, Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet. It is the people's duty to believe in and serve Allah in the manner that is laid out in the Quran. Most Kuwaitis are Sunni Muslims, though there's a substantial Shiite minority. The official language of Kuwait is Arabic, but English is widely understood. While not an ethnic group, Bedouin are archetypal Arabs: the camel-herding nomads who travel the deserts in search of food. From among their ranks came the warriors who spread Islam to North Africa and Persia 1400 years ago. Today Bedouin are found mainly in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, but their numbers are unknown due to their habit of wandering where no census-taker would dare. Cultural foundations do their part to preserve Bedouin art traditions, especially weaving, but the arts scene in Kuwait is otherwise fairly limited. The Bedouin loom is called Al-Sadu. Textiles are manufactured from sheep wool, dyed, then intricately woven. Fuul felafel and houmos are the three staples of the Middle East, and you'll find them at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Theater For a country of such small size, Kuwait boasts a very broad and rich culture, containing a particular heritage and encompassing certain trends whose roots are embedded in the cultural traditions of antiquity. Kuwait holds a strong tie to its past, and the government takes pride in its assistance in the retaining of historical artifacts and antiques, as well as in the preservation of the arts and modern cultural endeavors.
Folklore
Today, Kuwaiti society bases much of its culture on the country's ancient folklore, which is a broad-ranging mosaic of emblematic land and sea tales, riddles, and proverbs. In 1956, the Folklore Preservation Center was established in an attempt to collect, record, and classify Kuwaiti folklore, as a way of assuring that this piece of Kuwait's historical culture will forever be maintained and hold a prominent place in the traditions of today.

Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese 'Wonderful Films, Wonderful China' "These Chinese films are so wonderful, I enjoy them very much," a young Kuwaiti said as he came out of the theater, where a different Chinese film was shown every day during the past week. Ahmad Alasfoor, a 25-year-old computer engineer, said that he has seen all the movies shown in the Chinese Film Week, which was held from February 16 to 22 in the Kuwait Culture Center. "I used to watch Hong Kong action films on VCD," he said, adding that he was greatly impressed by these totally different Chinese movies over the past week. "Some were very moving and encouraging, like Black Eyes, and some comedies, like Spicy Love Soup, were so humorous that I laughed from the beginning to the end," he said. Yassen Al-Jassar, a 30-year-old woman who works in a government agency said "These films draw the outline of the colorful life of the modern Chinese citizens, and to tell you the truth, I am very surprised." She said that she has seen some Chinese films that have won prizes on several international festivals, describing the lives of villagers in the old days.
