History of Christianity in Korea: From Its Troubled Beginning to
Its Contemporary Success
Andrew E. Kim Source: Korea Overseas Information Service Preface Only about two percent of the Asian population is Christian, and while Christians are to be found in virtually every Asian country, it is South Korea that has witnessed the most spectacular and historically significant Christian expansion, particularly over the past three decades, the period of the country's remarkable modernization. Since the introduction of Catholicism in 1784, followed by the arrival of Protestant missionaries in 1884, Christianity has proceeded to becomeafter Buddhismthe largest religion in the country. Today about one third of South Korea's 45 million people are Christian11 million Protestants and 3 million Roman Catholics. Since the early 1960s, when South Korea's Christians scarcely topped the one million mark, the number of Christians, particularly Protestants, has increased faster than in any other country, doubling every decade. By 1994, moreover, there were over 35,000 churches and 50,000 pastors, making the South Korean church one of the most vital and dynamic in the world. In reviewing the history of Korean Christianity, we note certain peculiar circumstances of Korean history: Korea's long history of vulnerability to Chinese and Japanese control, Japanese colonialism and the Korean War, afforded Christianity a unique opportunity to offer a compelling salvation ethos and promise of both personal and national empowerment.

Korea Yesterday
Korea has a long and rich history. It was a unified nation for 1300 years. At a time when Europe was declining into the contentious "Dark Ages" of the Medieval period after the fall of the Roman Empire, Korea was creating new art, architecture, literature, science, and religion, and developing a strong central government that allowed for long periods of peace and prosperity. The Choson dynasty of Korea, which lasted over 500 years, is one of the world's longest lasting and most stable royal lines. Their palace, Kyong-Bok (shown above), was built in 1394 at Seoul. Korea's past has a strong influence on its present. Physical reminders of the past are found everywhere mixed with the structures of today. The South Gate (NamdaeMun, built 1396 AD) of the ancient wall around the old city of Seoul shown below is surrounded by modern buildings, power lines, and autos. A proper understanding of Korea today rests on at least a brief look at its history. So use the menu bar at the left to see how Korea has changed through the ages. He married SHODA Michiko (now Empress Michiko) in 1959. Akihito became emperor in 1989 and has affected a more relaxed presence than his father. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have three children. The eldest, Crown Prince Naruhito, was born in 1960. He married OWADA Masako in 1993. The couple's daughter, Aiko, was born in December 2001. CEAS Today in Asian History December 22 The Soviet Union ended several months of armed skirmishes in Manchuria by pulling its troops away from the Eastern Railway. The University of Texas Map Library has a wonderful collection of Asian maps. Among these are maps from Madrolle's Guide Books: Northern China. The 1912 volume has a map of Southern Manchuria , two maps of Dalian (Dairen) [ ] and two maps of Port Arthur [ KATO Shidzue, a feminist and one of the first women elected to the Japanese diet, died at 104. Kato was a pioneer in the birth control movement and devoted over 70 years of her life to it. She worked with U.S. advocate Margaret Sanger (bringing her to Japan seven times, the first in 1922) and was briefly imprisoned as a result of her activism. Kato was born to an elite family and was married to Baron ISHIMOTO Keikichi at age 17. Ishimoto was a liberal who went to the U.S. in 1919 and brought his wife to be with him shortly after that. The couple's two infant children were cared for by his family. Ishimoto compelled Kato to make her way "independently." She studied in a secretarial program in New York. After the couple returned to Japan, the Baron began working for the expanding Japanese empire and the couple grew apart. Kato became involved with another man (who was also married). Only after many years was Kato given permission by the Imperial Household Agency to end her marriage to the Baron and to marry labor organizer KATO Kanju. In 1946 Kato Shidzue joined the Japanese Socialist Party. She was elected to the diet and served for 28 years.
