    Introduction 2000
Background: While retaining its time-honored culture, Japan rapidly absorbed Western technology during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After its devastating defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become the second most powerful economy in the world and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth.

Graphic by Hiroshi Goto (Digital Image) Natural features Oita prefecture is situated on the north-east of Kyushu Island, facing the Inland Sea on the north-east, the Bungo Suido Sea on the east. We are blessed with hot springs represented by Beppu Hot Spring, and the flowing of hot water is second in quantity only to Hokkaido. There are hot springs all over the prefecture, and they attract many tourists through the year, along with the scenic beauty of Kuju Heights or Ida Heights. The deeply indented coast facing the Bungo Suido Sea has been known as Mecca for anglers. Climate and vegetation The climate is divided into two types because the prefecture is divided into coastland and mountains. On the coastland, in south of Beppu Bay it is warm in winter by the influence of the Japan Current and in north we have high temperature and little rain because of the Inland Sea. The inland basins of Hita, Kusu, Yufuin, and Takeda and mountains of Sobo, Katamuki, and Kuju have a cold and damp climate which is typical of the mountainous regions. The traffic of Yamanami Highway, which links Beppu with Aso by-way of Ida Heights, is sometimes disorganized by snowfall in winter.

Excerpt of humorous book on japan by Dave Berry.
    http://vms.www.uwplatt.edu/~geography/japan/japandb.html
Excerpts from Dave Barry Does Japan Random House, 1992. I wrote my book "Dave Barry Does Japan" to try, in some small way, to make this world a better place for people everywhere, and for the generations to come. I'm lying, of course! I wrote the book because I thought a trip to Japan might be pretty funny, especially since Random House had generously agreed to pay for the whole thing. This was a major factor, because I had heard that prices were pretty high in Japan. People who'd been there were always telling me horror stories. "Oh yes," they'd say, "In Tokyo, Frank ordered two eggs over medium and the bill came to $16,500, plus $312 for the parsley sprig, and he wound up having to sell both of his corneas." So in the summer of 1991 I filled several large suitcases with traveler's checks and went to Japan with my wife, Beth, and my 10-year-old son, Robert. We spent three weeks bumbling around in a disoriented, uncomprehending manner, The Three Cultural Stooges, because it turns out that Japan is an extremely foreign country, where you can never be sure whether the sign on the door you're about to open says:

Home About Us Search Back to Japan Japan's Geography Japan, lying off the eastern coast of the Asian continent, consists of four main islands - Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu - as well as thousands of adjacent smaller islands. The archipelago runs in an arc from north to south, stretching 3,800 km. Its total land area is 377,818 sq km, which is about 4% of that of the United States and slightly more than one and a half times as large as that of Britain. Japan occupies about 0.3% of the earth's total land area. Mountains claim 71% of Japan's land area, with plains and basins accounting for the remaining 29%. A chain of mountains extends along the middle of the long, narrow archipelago, dividing it into two sides, one facing the Pacific and the other the Sea of Japan. In general, the rivers are short and swift-flowing. The archipelago is washed by the warm Japan and Tsushima currents and the cold Kurile current. Japan abounds in volcanoes, including about one tenth of the world's active ones. Mount Fuji, the country's highest peak, is a dormant volcano. The general climate, except for part of Hokkaido in the north and some of the southernmost islands, is temperate with seasonal winds. Rainfall is abundant, ranging from 1,000 - 3,000 millimeters annually.

Home About Us Search Japan's Geography Summary of Japan's Geography The island of Japan forms an arc in the Pacific Ocean to the east of the Asian continent. The land comprises four large islands name (in decreasing order of size) Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, together with many smaller islands. The Pacific Ocean lies to the east while the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea separate Japan from the Asian continent. Japan's total land area is about 378,000 square km, which is approximately the same size as Germany, Finland, Vietnam, or Malaysia. As warm ocean current known as the Kuroshio flows northeastward along the southern part of the Japanese archipelago, and a branch of it, known as the Tsushima Current, flows into the Sea of Japan along the west side of the country. From the north, a cold current known as the Oyashio flows south along Japan's east coast, and a branch of it, called the Liman Current, enters the Sea of Japan from the north. The mixing of these warm and cold currents helps produce abundant fish resources in waters near Japan. About 3/4 of Japan's land surface is mountainous. The Chubu Region of central Honshu is known as the "roof of Japan" and has many mountains which are more than 3,000 meters high. Japan's highest mountain is Mt. Fuji (3,776 m) with Kitadake at 3,192 m being the second highest.
