Geography. COAST AND ISLANDS Italy consists of a peninsula jutting southeast into the Mediterranean for some 500 miles from the Alps and so closely resembles a leg with a hoot on it that it is common to talk of the toe and heel of Italy. On the west side south of Elba lies the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the eastern coast the Adriatic. Between the French border and the Tuscan archipelago lies the Ligurian Sea and along the south between Sicily and the heel and toe of Italy, the Ionian Sea. On the western side the Republic of Italy encompasses Sardinia and Sicily, two of the largest islands in the Mediterranean, as well as numerous small archipelagos lying close to the coast.

General Information
Geographical Position
Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches.
To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.
The Natural Environment
The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Preapennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

An appreciation of Italy's geography is useful in helping travelers more fully understand the history and culture of this wonderful country. From the snow-capped Alps to the sun-drenched island of Sicily, here is some pertinent geographical information for Italy. Italy is located in the south-central part of the European mainland, and is famous geographically for it's "boot-shaped" peninsula that begins in the Alps and extends for over 700 miles to the southeast into the Mediterranean Sea, with the "toe" of the boot about to "kick" the island of Sicily. To the east of the Italian peninsula is the Adriatic Sea, to the southeast the Ionian Sea, and to the west the Tyrrhenian Sea. Italy also encompasses two of the largest islands in the Mediterranean -

From the relatively narrow coastal plains the land rises sharply to the peaks of the Appennines which form a natural boundary with Umbria and Tuscany to the west. While the coastal areas are heavily populated the beautiful inland countryside is sparsely inhabited. The total population of the region is around 1.5 million with an average density of less than 150 inhabitants per square kilometre. The region covers just under 10,000 square kilometres. The inland mountainous zones are mostly limestone and are noted for bare peaks, rushing torrents, dramatic gorges and many complexes of caves. In contrast, the areas nearer the coastal plain are celebrated for their fertile rounded hills topped by ancient fortified towns. The highest point in the Marche is Monte Vettore in the Sibillini mountains at 2,476 metres. The coast itself boasts long sandy strands; apart from the limestone Conero peninsula, it is virtually all flat.

Records At The Family History Library
... HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY You may find that the name of the place where your ancestor came from has changed or that the name of the province or even the name of the country has changed. This section describes the changes that have taken place in Italy. This information can help you find records in the Family History Library Catalog for the place your ancestors lived. This section will describe the jurisdictions used in the Family History Library Catalog. Italy has been divided into various city states, duchies, and kingdoms under several different rulers throughout history. Parts of modern Italy used to be part of Austria, Switzerland, France, and the former Yugoslavia. The country that controlled Italy determined what records were to be kept. During the reign of Napoleon (from about 1808 to 1815), Italy was divided into provinces, communes, and hamlets. These political boundaries are basically the same today. Most of Italy was unified into a single kingdom in 1861. Venetia became part of the kingdom in 1866 and the city of Roma in 1870. Roma became the capital in 1871.
