Top of Page Israel is a small country in the middle east. The central plateau, called the West Bank, is the ancient Israel heartland containing Jerusalem. To the north are the Lebanese mountains. Israel has been in a political and sometimes military battle with its neighbors over its territory and very existence. The Gaza Strip on the Mediterranean coast was once part of Egypt. The West Band and East Jerusalem were part of Jordan. The Golan Heights is still in dispute with Syria. To the south of the West Bank is the Negev desert. The Negev desert represents about 60% of Israel's territory.

Sharing our Heritage Across the Globe Israel - Oklahoma Geography The state of Israel is very far away from Oklahoma. But as far away as Israel the land is, to the Jewish people, Israel is also a people as well as a country. As Jews we are united by our values, our heritage, our Torah. And we also are united by a bond to our homeland, Eretz Israel. In order to learn about and understand Israel, we need first to know where we live in relation to other places and those things about our own home that we want to know about Israel. Then we will proceed too study some of the same things about Israel. So here we go. Contents Credits Using this Workbook North America

Geography of Israel General Geographical Info:
    Location:
Israel is on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in the Middle East between the contries of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Its geographic coordinates are 31 30 N, 34 45 E.
Area: The total land and water area of Israel is 20,770 sq km. This is an area slightly smaller than the U.S. state of New Jersey.
Climate and Terrain: Israel has a temperate climate in most parts, but it is very hot and dry in southern and eastern desert areas (known as the Negev). Low coastal plain area on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea give rise to the Judaean Mountains in the central part of Israel.
Elevation extremes: The lowest point of Israel is the Dead Sea at 408 m (1302 ft) below sea level, and the highest point is Mount Meron at 1208 m (3692 ft) above sea level.
Info from About.com Map from About.com Water Issues in Israel:
The most valuble natural resource to the Israeli people is water. Much of the conflict in the Middle East is due to this natural resource. In the future, disputes over the large money-making resources of fossil fuels will give way to even larger disputs over the life-giving resource, water.
The low coastal plain land along the Mediterranean Sea is fertile and well-watered. Most of the rest of Israel is very dry and is unusable for crops unless irrigation is used. This irrigation water comes from mostly the Jordan River, Yarmouk River, several aquifers, and the Sea of Galilee. These sources are not inexhaustable. The Sea of Galilee continues to drop in depth, and the Jordan River does not reach the Dead Sea anymore. The aquifers are being overused as well.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: Following World War II, the British withdrew from their mandate of Palestine, and the UN partitioned the area into Arab and Jewish states, an arrangement rejected by the Arabs. Subsequently, the Israelis defeated the Arabs in a series of wars without ending the deep tensions between the two sides. The territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 war are not included in the Isreal country profile, unless otherwise noted. In keeping with the framework established at the Madrid Conference in October 1991, bilateral negotiations are being conducted between Israel and Palestinian representatives (from the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip) and Israel and Syria, to achieve a permanent settlement. On 25 April 1982, Israel withdrew from the Sinai pursuant to the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. Outstanding territorial and other disputes with Jordan were resolved in the 26 October 1994 Israel-Jordan Treaty of Peace.

    Geography Small Area; Short Distances
With Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Israel's area within its boundaries and ceasefire lines is 10,840 square miles (27,800 sq. km.). Long and narrow in shape, it is some 290 miles (470 km.) in length and about 85 miles (135 km.) across at the widest point.
Mountains and plains, fertile fields and desert are often minutes apart. The country's width, from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Dead Sea in the east, can be crossed by car in about 90 minutes; Jerusalem, in the Judean Hills,is less than an hour's drive from Tel Aviv on the coast; and the trip from Metulla, in the far north, to Eilat at the country's southern top takes about nine hours. The distance between Jerusalem, at an altitude of 2,739 feet (835 m.) above sea level, and the Dead Sea, which lies about 1,300 feet (400 m.) below sea level, cah be driven in less than one hour.
The coastal plain runs parallel to the Mediterranean Sea and is composed of a sandy shoreline, bordered by stretches of fertile farm-land extending up to 25 miles (40 km.) inland. In the north, expances of sandy beach are occasionaly punctuated by jagged chalk and sandstone cliffs which drop sheerly to the sea. The coastal plain is home to over half of Israel's more than 5 million people and includes major urban centers, deep water harbours, most of the country's industry and a large part of its agriculture and tourist facilities.
