Culture Most of the Israelites' culture was based on their religion, Judaism. The only thing the Israelites did for fun was they danced and played music. Ekron This is a pot and dome from a shrine in Canaan. This is a statue of a god during the time of the Israelites. In Ancient Israel the arts were either religious or made to help their daily life. Most of their music was also religious. The Israelites are known for their creative dancing, though. They danced when they won wars, and at most religious ceremonies. Agricultural Holidays There are two main agricultural holidays: Passover and Shavuot. In Passover the Israelites could not eat anything that had flour in it. The Israelites had no time to let the bread rise so they had to eat 'Matza'. Matza is bread without yeast, which means it is flat bread. Shavout is based on the first fruit of the seven species: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, olives, and dates. Museum Lobby Africa China India ... ISRAEL (CULTURE (See also “ Israel-Israeli Film ABOVE AND BEYOND Pur This film talks briefly about how Chanukah celebrates heroes like the Maccabees. It focuses on and interviews three real modern day heroes of Israel—one each from the War of Independence, the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War. Produced by the World Zionist Organization. Study guide available. Note: The opening and closing segments of the video involve three college students in Israel working on a video project about Jewish holidays. Teachers may wish to skip these—as the acting is poor and the situation is artificial—and focus on the segment which interviews the Israeli heroes. 25 min. back Israel's culture of reservists
The objectors do not want to serve in the West Bank
By BBC News Online's Kathryn Westcott The refusal of some 50 reserve officers of the Israeli Defence Forces to serve in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza strip strikes at the heart of the notion of Israeli citizenship For much of Israel's history, serving in the reserves for a few weeks a year until well into middle age - a legal requirement - was regarded as an honour. This is the tip of the iceberg. The army's reaction is one of panic Ishai Menuvhin, There's a limit! With a small population, the only way Israel can maintain an army of sufficient size to protect its borders is through reservists. Conscientious objection is not new. Many reservists refused to take part in Israel's occupation of Lebanon and to serve in the occupied territories during the previous Palestinian uprising. But what makes this case so unusual is that so many combat reservists, soldiers and officers have come forward publicly at one time.
Prison sentences
This has sparked a divided reaction. Some people have labelled the men traitors and cowards, others say they are men of principles.

All About Israel - Culture Weather Religion Politics Facts
Israel is at the crossroads of the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe, meaning it is the place where the modern, Western world meets the fascinating Orient and the mystic of Saharan Africa. Eighty percent of the population is Jewish, consisting of remnants from scattered and often ancient Jewish communities from 100 nations who have been remarkably regathered to the Land of their Fathers after nearly 2000 years of exile and dispersion. This alone makes Israel a rich melting pot of traditions, languages and cultures of Jewish peoples from such diverse places as the vast Russian landscape, Central Europe, India, and China, and also including Moroccan Jews, Yemenite Jews, Persian Jews, Ethiopian Jews, Marrano Jews, the list goes on... From 1919 to 1998, a total of 3,139,462 Jewish immigrants came from all over the world. Over 50% came from Europe, with large numbers of new olim coming also from Africa, Asia and America. The Central Bureau of Statistics reports Jewish immigration from more than a 100 countries with over 150 different languages. About 20% of the population are Arabic peoples, with most being Muslims, but also including several Christian communities. In addition, there are a wide variety of distinct ancient peoples and tribes, such as Bedouin nomads, Mameluks, Druse, Armenians, Samaritans, Circassians, and other ethnic groups who have settled here over the centuries.

Culture
Until recently, Israel's culture has been predominantly religious, be it Jewish, Christian or Muslim. Although the hoe-that-field, pick-that-fruit, scoutlike kibbutz feeling is still in evidence, and although Judaism is the state religion, Israel is rapidly turning into a cosmopolitan consumerist society. Most Jewish Israelis play it both ways, leading a largely secular life but still taking part in the occasional religious ceremony. This is not to say that orthodoxy has died out: on the contrary, orthodox factions are becoming stronger and stronger, and their calls for a return to religiosity are louder and louder. Many Orthodox - and particularly Hasidic - Jews are recognisable by their dark clothes, beards and curly sideburns (although women tend to forego the beards and sideburns). In Palestinian parts of the country, Muslim culture is more evident: you'll generally see fewer women, and those that you do see will be dressed more modestly. Sunni is the predominant Muslim sect. Family and hospitality are very important in Palestinian life, and most Palestinians are extremely friendly and helpful to strangers, going so far as to welcome them into their homes. Israel is renowned for its classical music, with artists such as violinist Yitzhak Perlman strutting the world stage. Klezmer, the knees-up violin-based Yiddish folk music, is hugely popular in Israel and has spread its tentacles to Jewish communities around the world. The founders of the Zionist movement were writers, and literature is still strongly supported in Israel - successful exports have included Amos Oz and David Grossman. The Palestinian community also has a strong literary tradition, born out of adversity and struggle - poetry is particularly popular. In their passion to impose a Jewish identity on their new homeland, the new Israelis took to architecture with a passion, resulting in the form-over-function Internationalist style as well as the spread of Bauhaus buildings. Few Islamic buildings have survived into the 20th century, but there is some beautiful Mamluk architecture in Old Jerusalem.
