    CULTURE of ISRAEL
I srael is a young country, small in size, but with a widely varied landscape and a culturally active, heterogeneous population of justover 5 million. It is a place where East meets West; where past and present touch; and where ideologies mold lifestyles. Four thousand years of Jewish heritage and over four decades of modern statehood have contributed to an Israeli culture which strives to create an identity of its own, while preserving the uniqueness of each contributing community. Emerging from the encounter between the individuals and the society, it blends tradition and innovation, steers a course between Israeli particularism and universal elements, and grows from a conflict between artistic freedom and the need to cater to public tastes. A n immigrant society, its creative expression has absorbed many different cultural and social influences, as the traditions of each group not only contend with those of other groups, but also confront the country's recent history and life in a Middle Eastern context. The ongoing search for cultural identity is expressed through dynamic creativity in a broad range of art forms, appreciated and enjoyed by a great many people, not as an elitist activity but as part of daily life. I srael's international cultural ties focus on cooperation in a broad range of fields, including language, literature, the arts, science, media and sports. Based on official two-way agreements with some 45 countries, in addition to links with many others, activities range from student and academic exchange programs and reciprocal tours by dance troupes, theater companies, art exhibits, musicians and orchestras, to participation in book fairs, film festivals and sports competitions and the teaching of the language and cultural traditions of both countries.

"Israel is very "civilized" within the framework of a struggling and pressurized Middle Eastern nation that strives very hard to be "Western."
Israelis have perceptions of time, space and values that are completely different from those of North Americans. Israelis see Americans as artificial and square, when they are actually just showing respect. Americans think Israelis are arrogant, rude and pushy, when in realilty they are being direct and honest. Israel is a very small country whose population is one big family. In a family people can be as direct and honest as they want. But now that family members are selling their goods and services outside the clan, Israelis are adapting."

Israel Culture Week to balance culture, politics
    By Andrew Whelan
Aggie Staff Writer February 14, 2002 - Aggies for Israel promises to mix in an appropriate level of attention to Middle Eastern politics in its Israel Culture Week, which kicks off tonight with a Shabbat dinner and discussion of the history of Israel since 1948.
Horwatt added that there has been a lot of misinformation about Israel and that there is a need for students to learn the facts and clear up misconceptions.
Amrani participated in negotiations with the Palestinian Authority in 1995 and served as a foreign policy advisor to the President of Israel in 1994.
Israel Culture Week will balance culture and politics, according to Horwatt. He also said the Arab-Israeli conflict cannot be ignored.
On Tuesday night the focus of the culture week shifts to the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. On Thursday, there will be a Coffee House panel on terrorism.
Two Shabbat dinners will highlight the beginning and end of the culture week.

    Culture in Israel
    by Asher Weill
    (June 2000)
A review of any country's cultural history over the last fifty years would show enormous changes - undoubtedly a quantum leap - and certainly more changes than in any other fifty year period in history. How much more so in Israel, where that same period was marked by a series of cataclysmic events which had - and are still having - an effect on the very nature and cultural character of this young but old nation. Israel in 1948: a country of 640,000 Jews; just three years after the annihilation of six million Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe. A country on the eve of invasion by five neighboring Arab nations intent on wiping it out, or, in the words of one Arab leader, "driving the Jews into the sea." A country in the throes of absorbing the remnant of decimated European Jewry - despoiled of all their worldly goods and brutally severed from their cultural and linguistic roots, but intent on surviving and creating a new life in the one piece of land that was prepared to accept them. Each of the decades that followed was marked by yet more social and political convulsions. The fifties were the years of the
