October 20, 1998 Lesson Plan: Scanning for Information Background information: Class: early intermediate, 20 students Language spoken: mostly adult Spanish speakers Objective : Students will be able to apply the reading technique of scanning to real world texts. In this lessons students will look for specific information (time, date, place/location, etc.) from a bus schedule in order to communicate the necessary information to someone else. Materials : Overhead transparency of bus schedule, 20 authentic bus schedules Introduction : The teacher begins with a personal experience about trying to get onto the right bus without a schedule. (The discussion might include how the teacher needed the information quickly and didn't have time to read the entire schedule). Ask students what information the teacher should scan for. Write the following on the board-time(departure and arrival), place(starting point, destination), names of the bus stops, etc. Practice 1 : The teacher places a copy of a bus schedule on the overhead and assumes the role of someone who needs bus schedule information. Ask questions that require the students to look at the overhead and scan the text for the information. As the class answers the questions, the teacher can underline the information.

Introduction to Peabody Lesson Plans
Introduction
Electronic information literacy is becoming increasingly more important in the current information age. For young people to succeed in school, therefore, they must be knowledgeable about how to find, evaluate, and utilize electronic sources. This statement is clearly supported by both the American Library Association (ALA) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). The ALA describes five information literacy objectives. These include:
  • Knowing when they (students) have a need for information. Identifying information needed to address a given problem or issue. Finding needed information and evaluation the information. Organizing the information. Using the information effectively to address the problem or issue at hand.
In addition, ISTE suggests that the technology literate student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems. Use technology tools to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources. Evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

Can you trust everything you read on the Internet? Can you trust anything you read on the Internet? Teach your kids which Web sites to trust!
The words you are reading now have undergone exhaustive editorial review. They've been scrutinized, analyzed, and revised; vetted for personal bias and misinformation; and subjected to spell checks, grammar checks, fact checks, quality checks, and checks for typographical and coding errors. They've been read and reread by several experienced editors and educators. They are words you can trust posted at a site you can trust. At a time, however, when any ignoramus or satirist or bigot or fool with an ax to grind can create a professional-looking Web site, how do you know which sites you can trust?
