    Willkommen in Indonesien
Update : GTZ Office Jakarta - Organization Chart Events in GTZ Indonesia About GTZ Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago, extending about 1,700 km from north to south and 5,200 km from east to west. In addition to the main islands Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan (South Borneo) and Irian Jaya, there are about 30 smaller archipelagos embracing altogether approx. 17,000 islands. Some 6,000 of these islands are inhabited. With a population of roughly 213 million (of whom approx. 90% are Moslems), Indonesia is also the fourth most populous country and at the same time the largest Islamic nation in the world.
Economic growth was considerable in the 13 years up to mid-1997 and amounted to eight per cent in 1996. Indonesia too was hard hit by the financial and economic crisis in Southeast Asia. In 1998 Indonesia's GNP shrank by approx. 13%. This downward trend has now slowed down to a period of stagnation and it is currently assumed that in the medium term economic growth will regain its pre-crisis proportions.

    Government
Indonesia is governed under the constitution of 1945, which was restored in 1959. The unicameral legislature is the 500-member House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat or DPR), 425 of whom are popularly elected and 75 of whom are appointed from the military. This body plus 500 indirectly selected members make up the People's Consultative Assembly (Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat or MPR), which meets every five years to determine national policy and to elect the president and vice president. The president, who is the chief executive, appoints a cabinet. For over 30 years, until 1999, the government was essentially controlled by the quasi-official Golkar party. Administratively, the country is divided into 27 provinces. INDONESIA: Government arrests senior terror figure
Since last October, there's been a lingering question about whether the group blamed for the Bali bombings is planning another attack. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty has said that at least one further attack had been foiled. Now, attention is on the interrogation of a senior figure in Jemaah Islamiah, who has been arrested in Indonesia, with hopes that he'll reveal more about the groups operations. The man in custody is the suspected leader of the Singapore branch of J-I. listen audio help Presenter/Interviewer: Peter Lloyd, Southeast Asia correspondent
Speakers: Rohan Gunaratne, terrorism specialist and co-author of the Singapore government White Paper on terrorism. PETER LLOYD: This was a coup for President Megawati Sukarnoputri's government, which has long been criticized for failing to take part in the region-wide fight against terrorism.
Up 'til now her police have only been arresting JI members in connection with the Bali attacks, but in recent weeks, at the request of Singapore, they've been widening the net and now it looks like they've got the big one; Mas Salamat Kastari, the island State's most wanted terror suspect.
