http://users.aol.com/hbraam/geo.htm
The Geography of INDONESIA I ndonesia is strategically located between two continents (Asia and Australia) and between two oceans (the Indian and the Pacific Ocean). T he five largest Indonesian islands are Sumatera, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya (actually half of the New Guinea island). Java is home to approximately 63% of the national population and is the most densely populated island.
The strategic location of Indonesia W ith more than 13,000 islands totalling a land area of more than 1.9 million km-sq, Indonesia is divided into 27 provinces. The country stretches from Sabang (Aceh) in the west to Merauke (Irian Jaya) in the east covering an area of 3,500 miles (5,600 km) in width (a distance equivalent to London-Teheran). L ocated along the equator, Indonesia has a tropical climate with high humidity and high temperature. Except at highlands, temperature usually ranges between 20 o C and 30 o C and the average humidity is 60% to 90%. Indonesia has two seasons, the dry season that normally lasts from March to August and the wet season from September through March with the heaviest rainfall usually starting from November through February. T he country is divided into three different time zones: West, Central and East, with one hour difference between each zone. Add one hour when travelling from West to East. West Indonesia Time is 7 hours ahead of GMT.

Indonesia
In Indonesia, food fish and aquarium fish are caught using the poison sodium cyanide. Sometimes the poison is shot directly at the target fish to stun them and make them easier to catch alive. Other times, entire 55-gallon drums of cyanide are dumped onto the reefs, turning them into aquatic graveyards, as the chemical kills living coral, invertebrates and non-target fish. Dynamite is also used for fishing in this country. Fishers blast reefs with dynamite or other explosives that rupture fishes' air bladders, so they can scoop them up as they float to the surface. The explosions destroy reef formations, kill non-target fish (by-catch) and often kill or maim the fishers themselves.

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. It consists of five major islands and about 30 smaller groups. The figure for the total number of islands is 17,508 according to the Indonesian Naval Hydro-Oceanographic office. The archipelago is on a crossroads between two oceans, the Pacific and the Indian ocean, and bridges two continents, Asia and Australia. This strategic position has always influenced the cultural, social, political and economic life of the country. The territory of the Republic of Indonesia stretches from 6 o 08' north latitude to 11 o 15' south latitude, and from 94 o 45' to 141 o 05' east longitude. The Indonesian sea area is four times greater than its land area, which is about 1.9 million sq. km. The sea area is about 7.9 million sq. km (including an exclusive economic zone) and constitutes about 81% of the total area of the country. The five main islands are: Sumatra, which is about 473,606 sq. km. in size; the most fertile and densely populated islands, Java/Madura, 132,107 sq. km; Kalimantan, which comprises two-thirds of the island of Borneo and measures 539,460 sq. km; Sulawesi, 189,216 sq. km; and Irian Jaya, 421,981 sq. km, which is part of the world's second largest island, New Guinea. Indonesia's other islands are smaller in size. The archipelago is divided into three groups. The islands of Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan, and the small islands in-between, lie on the Sunda Shelf which begin on the coasts of Malaysia and Indo China, where the sea depth does not exceed 700 feet. Irian Jaya which is part of the island of New Guinea, and the Aru Islands lie on the Sahul Shelf, which stretches northwards from the Australian coast. Here the sea depth is similar to that of the Sunda Shelf.

Geography of Indonesia and Australia
Indonesia and Australia are nations located southeast of Asia, separated by the Timor Sea and the Java Trench. Both have undergone challenges in economy, government, and demography that are both similar and quite different from the other. Indonesia is “the world’s most expansive archipelagic (fragmented) state” (Blij 503) with multiple heritages and cultures. Australia has been slowly declining over the past century and continues to economically disintegrate. According to records kept on the economy, government, and demography, both Australia and Indonesia are continuing to be recognized as similar and distinct in their own right. DEMOGRAPHY AND LAND STRUCTURE
The 275 million people of Indonesia are spread across the 13,000 islands it encompasses. It holds position as the fourth most populated nation in the world, containing a diversity of people including Javanese, Sudanese, Malays, and Balinese and other smaller groups which make up fifty-five percent of the population. Four of its largest islands are known as the Greater Sunda Islands. Jawa has the smallest area but is largest in population density (with about 120 million), Sumatera is in the west across from Malaysia, Kalimantan (which shares land space with Malaysia on Borneo), and Sulawesi, which is also called Celebes, the “wishbone – shaped” island of the east. The fifth largest island is New Guinea, which is not primarily a part of Indonesian cultural ties although half of its western side of the island is under Indonesian control.

My research focuses upon the exploration and theorisation of how people in developing countries in Southeast Asia make a living, within the broader framework of the global economy. In particular I study the socio-economic and political processes which shape the ‘informal sector’ and small scale enterprises in urban Southeast Asia. This work spans a number of countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Vietnam and Thailand. Currently my field work research is based in Makassar, Indonesia, and Hanoi and Sa Pa, Vietnam. This work is structured around questions which focus on a number of dimensions of change in the global economy. Firstly, at the macro scale, how the Southeast Asian countries have been increasingly incorporated into the global economy; secondly, at the meso scale, what have been the local actions and reactions to these changes; and thirdly, at the micro scale, how have these processes impacted and in turn been operationalised by people involved with small scale enterprises and the ‘informal sector’.

    Geography
I ndonesia is divided into 27 provinces , 3 of which are special territories - Jakarta, Yogyacarta and Aceh.
Indonesia is located between Southeast Asia and Australia. The Indonesia archipelago consists of some 13 667 islands covering a total area of 1 904 569 square km from the Malay Peninsula in the west to New Guinea in the east. The principal islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (approx. 60% of Borneo), Sulawesi and Irian Jaya (approx. 50% of New Guinea are all characterized by their mountainous volcanic terrain covered by dense equatorial rainforest. Volcanic activity on the fertile and densly populated island of Java is particularly pronounced. Between the two ocean shelves of Sunda ( Malaysian and Indochinese extension) and Sahul (emanating from northern Australia) the Lesser Sundas, the Maluku and Sulawesi form the island summits of subaquatic mountain ranges flanked by sea trenches 4500m in depth. The Kapuas and Barito Rivers dominate the Indonesian hydrological profile, draining Kalimantan to the west and to the south. Lake Toba is situated on Sumatra at an altitude of 900m. Of the total surface area, 8% is arable land and over two-thirds is forest or woodland, including mangrove swamps along the Sumatran and Kalimantan coastlines.

The height of this flag is two-thirds the width. In Indonesian, this flag is called "Sang Saka Merah Putih" (meaning "lofty bicolor red and white"). The red symbolizes human blood and the white represents the human spirit. The design of this flag is based on the 13th century Javan Majapahit Empire flag that had nine red and white stripes. 8 – Indonesia
Indonesia is an archipelago of nearly 13,000 islands, many of them uninhabited and unnamed. The population is now over 200 million, making it the fourth most populous country in the world. Indonesia's economy grew from a per capita GNP of US$70 in 1966 to US$980 in 1998. However, the increased wealth has been distributed unevenly, with the large rural population having benefited very little. Telecom Infrastructure The country is mainly mountainous and heavily forested, making a telecom network difficult to install. By the early 1990s, there were still only one million lines serving nearly 200 million people. Most of those lines were installed in or around the capital, Jakarta. While geography was (and still is) a problem, the principal cause of the inadequate infrastructure was that the industry suffered for years from almost total neglect. High tariffs, vested interests and indifference to customers featured prominently. It was commonplace to wait hours for a dialling tone and, when contact was made, the call completion rate averaged less than 25%. Moreover, line quality was generally poor. Regulatory Environment There are two incumbent operators, PT Telkom (domestic) and PT Indosat (international).
