ABOUT INDONESIA > GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
GEOGRAPHY Indonesia is the largest archipelago (1,904,686 square kilometers) in the world, straddles the equator between the Asian and Australian continents, extending 5,110 kilometers from east to west and 1,888 kilometers from north to south, and comprising the five main island Java (home to about 70% of the country's population), Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya with 13,677 other islands of varying size and over than seven million square kilometers of ocean. The Archipelago divided into three groups. The islands of Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan, and the small islands in-between, lie on the Sunda Shelf which begin on the coasts of Malaysia and Indo-China, where the sea depth does not exceed 700 feet, Irian Jaya which is part of the island of New Guinea, and the Aru islands lie on the Sahul Shelf, which streches northwards from Australian coast. Here the sea depth is similar to that of the Sunda Shelf. Located between these two shelves is the island group of Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Sulawesi, where the sea depth reaches 15,000 feet. Coastal plains have been developed around the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Irian Jaya.

Indonesia - Geography The geographical diversity of Indonesia takes you from tropical swamps in Kalimantan and Sumatra, to rainforest across much of the archipelago, up to the glaciated 5000m peaks of Carstenz Pyramid and it's neighbours.
An active volcano arc runs through Sumatra, Java and the islands of Nusa Tenggara, and to the North through Maluku to Sulawesi.
    Climate
At sea level there is little variation in temperature throughout the year. In general seasons are dictated by the North East monsoon which hits from December to March, however there are regional variations.
Sumatra' s climate for example is affected by the South West monsoon bringing rain between June and October, and so resembles West Malaysia. On the other hand islands to the East of Nusa Tenggara such as Sumbawa and Sumba are predominantly dry with a low annual rainfall.

    INTRODUCTION TO BALI, INDONESIA
    WHERE IS BALI?
The island of Bali is part of the Republic of Indonesia and is located 8 to 9 degrees south of the equator between Java in the West and Lombok and the rest of the Lesser Sunda Islands (Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba and Timor) in the East. Flying time to Jakarta is about 1.5 hours, to Singapore and Perth (Australia) 2.5 and 3 hours, and to Hong Kong about 4 hours.
    GEOGRAPHY:
The island of Bali has an area of only 5,632 square kilometers (2,175 square miles) and measures just 55 miles (90 kilometers) along the north-south axis and less than about 90 miles (140 kilometers) from East to West. Because of this it's no problem to explore the island on day tours. You can go wherever you want on the island and return to your hotel or villa in the evening.
Located only two kilometers east of Jawa, Bali's climate, flora and fauna are quite similar to its much larger neighbour. The island is famous for its beautiful landscape. A chain of six volcanoes, between 1,350 meters and 3,014 meters high, stretches from west to east. There are lush tropical forests, pristine crater lakes, fast flowing rivers and deep ravines, picturesque rice terraces, and fertile vegetable and fruit gardens. The beaches in the South consist of white sand, beaches in other parts of the island are covered with gray or black volcanic sand.
    FLORA:
The wide variety of tropical plants is surprising. You'll see huge banyan trees in villages and temple grounds, tamarind trees in the North, clove trees in the highlands, acacia trees, flame trees, and mangroves in the South. In Bali grow a dozen species of coconut palms, and even more varieties of bamboo.

    Geography of Indonesia
Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. It stretching 5.120 kilometers from east to west, it bestrides the equator between the Australian and Asian Continents.
Indonesia: famous for its beaches Indonesia, the name, came from two Greek words: "Indos" meaning Indonesian and "Nesos" meaning islands. This is an excellent description of the archipelago. There are an supposed to be an estimated 17,508 islands. Some of these are nothing more than tiny outcroppings of barren rock, and others are as big as Spain or California and hooded in dense tropical jungle. Approximately 6,000 of these islands are populated, with five main islands and 30 smaller archipelagos serving as home to the majority of the population. The main islands of Indonesia are:
    • Sumatra (473,606 square kilometers) Kalimantan (539,460 square kilometers) Irian Jaya (421,981 square kilometers) Sulawesi (189,216 square kilometers) Java (132,187 square kilometers)
