    To Your Physical Education Program
  • Fitness - In his classic book AEROBICS Dr. Kenneth Cooper states: "The best exercises are run ning swimming, cycling. walking, HANDBALL, basketball, and squash - and in just about that order". Handball also develops each of the other components of physical fitness. In a survey by the Presdents Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, fourteen popular sports and exercises were rated by seven fitness experts. Using the criteria of cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and balance, HANDBALL WAS RANKED NUMBER ONE, followed by swimming and jogging. A Lifetime Sport - Team Sports and games are fine, but it's important to expose students to lifetime activities as well. Handball is one of the few lifetime sports that is fitness and skill related. The game is addictive, and competition is available in all age categories, even for the over 70 crowd. A Game for Everyone - With the invention of the new family handball a few years ago, handball has become a sport for everyone. This ball is slightly softer than the regulation handball and does not hurt the hands. There are now all kinds of competitions for women, from the National Open and National Collegiate levels down to the Junior age divisions.

Your Turn January 2003 Vol.4 Issue 1 Comprehension as Part of Reading Instruction For instructional planning purposes, it has been traditional to talk about reading instruction in two separate parts - word recognition and comprehension. Word recognition has been discussed in a previous segment. In this segment the focus will be on "comprehension." Comprehension involves a receiving of the message conveyed in printed material. Strictly speaking, comprehension is reading, since without an understanding of the author's intended message, no communication has taken place, therefore true reading has not occurred. Simply being able to call the words from a printed page (word recognition) does not alone complete the reading process.

Writing Across the Curriculum Lesson Plans for Electives Introduction: Writing Across the Curriculum is an emphasis in the school setting today because we want students to be able to express themselves clearly and concisely in any future work situation they choose. Good writing is organized and creative thinking on paper. We write for many reasons: to inform, to persuade, to communicate, to tell a story, to reflect, to entertain, and to record what we know and present what we have learned. Writers must write in order to develop. Therefore, writing as a part of many subjects and disciplines is necessary if we want students become good writers. Listed below are a number of lesson plans from Language Arts and various Electives. At some point within each lesson, students will create various written products. Many of these plans may be adapted to several different disciplines. Click and explore. Adding "Snap" to Language Arts Taking photographs and using them as a starter or stimulus can be used to get into many subjects and disciplines. Students take a picture of themselves (biography), their animals (science, biology, nature study) , things that are important to them and then they use these photos as springboard for a writing project. Writing to Describe a Process: Using a Cookie Recipe Exchange Model as a Starter.
