Some are direct, or as direct as possible, links to organizations or documents while others offer background information or examples of points I have raised. These may not be definitive examples or original information sources but they were chosen because of availability and demonstration of the variety of activities the Corridor encompasses). Approximately 3 million years ago geologic activity, in what is now Panama, parted the ocean to reveal a land bridge between North and South America. The bridge caused dramatic changes in evolution and geography, the effects of which are still being assessed today. The Gulf Stream was created by the separation of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, thereby making the climate in Western Europe much more hospitable. Locally, the event allowed the exchange of plant and animal species between two previously isolated continents. Known as the Great American Faunal Interchange, this period of natural history had enormous influence on the present species composition of North, Central, and South America. Many species of large mammals followed the lush vegetation south from North America. Predators (including humans) soon followed their prey changing the landscape forever. Central and South America, did not have much previous experience with the effects of larger predators and prey on ecosystems. Plants, predators, and prey, were left to evolve together. The result is a series of complex ecosystems, in a delicate balance with their inhabitants and each other, where ~7-8% of the world's species live in just .5% of earth's land area.

" International solidarity is not an act of charity. It is an act of unity between allies fighting on different terrains toward the same objective. The foremost of these objectives is to aid the development of humanity to the highest level possible.." st President of Mozambique Today we live in a global capitalist system dominated by transnational corporations and the military. To challenge their power requires a huge popular bottom-up movement that is grounded within our communities, our country and the hemisphere. Increasingly we see stirrings of this bottom-up movement in the emerging leadership, relationships and networks we are building locally, nationally and across borders. COMPA "Convergence of Movements of the Peoples of the Americas" offers an example of such cross border movement building. For these reasons and others Project South made a strategic decision to join COMPA and to participate as a delegate organization in the Continental/General Assembly in Havana, Cuba from Nov. 20-23, 2002. Our decision was rooted in the reality of the need to build a global bottom-up movement in response to capitalist-corporate globalization; and the opportunity this hemispheric network offers to begin that process with our closest neighbors.

    French Guyana update
Indigenous Peoples and Maroons in French Guiana Demand Land Rights in Proposed National Park
From the Forest Peoples Programme, 7 September 1998
The National Park, known as the Park of the French Guianese Forest, will cover the southern third of the French Guiana. It was originally proposed as the Park of the South Indigenous and Maroon rights are not recognised in any way under French law. Indeed, Indigenous peoples and Maroons are not recognised at all under French law, which holds that according to the principle of equality enshrined in the French Constitution all French citizens have equal rights, and distinctions based upon race or ethnicity are unconstitutional. The French government has even registered reservations to minority rights provisions in human rights treaties using this principle as justification. Consequently, Indigenous peoples and Maroons are not only seeking to have their territorial rights recognised by the state, they are also seeking recognition of their identity as distinct peoples per se. The original proposal for the park included the establishment of

It is named after the Equator, which runs through it. Colonized as early as 10,000 B.C., Ecuador eventually developed large agricultural states, with centers which produced magnificent monumental architecture, finely woven textiles, intricately fashioned metals, and beautiful ceramics. Probably the most well-known historical inhabitants of Ecuador are the Incas. A relatively late, successful, expansionist empire, the Incas spread, in approximately 100 years, across much of western South America from a small city in the highlands of Peru. The capital of the northern part of the empire was the city that became the current capital of Ecuador, Quito. When the Spanish arrived in 1532, the leader, Francisco Pizarro, managed to defeat the Incas by playing off different factions of the empire against each other and eventually kidnapping, and later executing, the victorious Inca leader, Atahualpa. Ecuador was ruled by Spain for almost 300 years, and an important area of study in the country is the analysis of the thousands of administrative documents that the Spanish left behind. As well as the archives, the Spanish left populations, cultural ideas, Roman Catholicism, African slaves, colonial architecture, and the Castilian language.
