The Division of Molecular Biology and Immunology is predominantly concerned with an experimental biological approach to the study of a number of important eukaryotic parasites of humans. Many of our studies are directed towards developing new methods for the treatment and diagnosis of disease but we are also concerned with the mechanisms by which parasites induce disease. A unique part of our activity that is not related to the study of parasites is snake venom research which deals with a very important public health problem in the tropics. In recognition of its status the Venom Unit is a WHO Collaborating Centre for the Control of Antivenoms. In addition to the studies that may have a practical application there is also work in the division of a more fundamental nature examining basic issues in the cell biology and molecular genetics of parasites.

For a more comprehensive view on this topic read this accompanying article Since the times of the Greeks conventional medicine has traditionally utilized the biomedical model. This model focuses on dualism involving the mind and the body interactions. The biomedical model treats disease as a pathology that occurs within the person. The doctor's function is to control the pathology, repair the body and restore health. The limitation of this model is that it excludes any psychological, social or ecological factors. [1] In contrast, the humanistic model utilizes a pleuralistic approach considering interactions and the interconnectedness between the mind, the body and the spirit when treating "dis-ease" within a person. The health or well-being of the body can no longer ignore the impact of the mind, the emotions or the spirit on the process. [1,2] This pleuralistic model, considering mind-body-spirit is being scientifically supported in the relatively new field of study—

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) in Immunology is designed to provide stimulating and rewarding research opportunities for undergraduates considering graduate education in Immunology. The program is sponsored and administered by the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is a premier research center and provides an exceptional environment for students to gain research experience under the guidance of internationally recognized immunologists. The Immunology program faculty includes 38 active members, whose labs study such areas as basic immunologic mechanisms autoimmunity, transplantation, cancer, and infectious disease.
Goal
The goal of this program is to provide undergraduate students who have an interest in immunology with the opportunity for a hands-on research experience. The research laboratory experience will provide students with a greater understanding of the scientific process as well as direct experience in state of the art techniques. The program is intended to support and encourage the interests of highly motivated s tudents who are considering the pursuit of an advanced degree in immunology.

In recognition of the importance of immunology, the University of Washington established an independent Department of Immunology in 1989. This reflected the realization that immunologic disorders were of great importance in medicine and that the science of immunology, although sharing a conceptual base with biochemistry and microbiology, had developed a distinct intellectual focus, vocabulary, and technical armamentarium. Roy D. Altman, M.D.
Chief, Division of
Rheumatology and Immunology Welcome to the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Since 1955, the division has grown from a small bench space in a campus building to an internationally renowned research and clinical care program. During the last 45 years the division has trained nearly 75 clinical rheumatologists and 20 postgraduate laboratory physicians and scientists. Basic research has centered on osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. The physicians and specialists that make up our dedicated team of professionals are committed to improving the care of patients with arthritis and rheumatic diseases through a balanced program of rheumatologic care encompassing arthritic and immune mediated diseases, a strong rheumatology fellowship program, teaching of rheumatology at all levels of medical education, clinical research with a focus on bone and joint diseases, and basic science research with a focus on osteoarthritis and related conditions.

These programs are designed to provide individualized training oriented towards basic research and a solid scientific background in the discipline of immunology. Entering students complete two core courses and they participate in interlaboratory research seminars, journal clubs and seminars presented by visiting speakers. The Immunology Research Group has an interdisciplinary character and consists of faculty from basic medical sciences, clinical sciences and oncology research of the Faculty of Medicine. Research laboratories are housed within the Health Sciences Centre, which also provides for laboratories performing research in other basic science discipline, and contains the General Hospital and the Health Sciences Library. This setting provides an excellent opportunity for collaborative interactions between scientists and easy access to the published source materials. To be considered for admission, applicants must have a bachelor's degree and have a superior academic record. Students entering into the program are assigned a faculty supervisor and a supervisory committee to monitor the student's progress and assist in the research project. The students in the program are also required to take a minimum of two graduate courses. The required core courses for all students are Medicine 6127 and Medicine 6128. Some students may be required to take additional courses, depending upon the thesis topic. Foreign students may also be required to take a course in English as a Second Language.

T-Lymphocyte and Natural Killer Cell Pathways
T lymphocytes mature in the thymus, where they undergo a series of differentiation, expansion, and selection events under the influence of the thymic environment. Drs. She, Simpson, Wang, Wang, and Deborah Allen, study early T-lymphocyte development in a large number of mutant and transgenic mouse models. Their efforts focus on understanding the early phase of T-cell and natural killer cell differentiation, i.e., before T-cell receptor rearrangement and expression. In collaboration with Drs. Georg Höllander and Steven Burakoff (Dana Farber Cancer Institute), a novel hematopoietic stem cell transplant system has been set up to study the influence of prothymocytes on stromal development.
Drs. Jian She, Stephen Simpson, Sandrijn van Schaik, Ype de Jong, and Martina Comiskey are dissecting the complex T-lymphocyte populations in the large intestine and colon of the laboratory mouse and humans. Their efforts focus on the function of intra-epithelial T lymphocytes in normal and mutant mouse models. Of particular interest is a study of the development of ulcerative colitis in several of these mouse strains. Two major works focus on the role of intestinal CD4+.
