It was formed to develop critical mass for basic science investigation of the immune basis of childhood diseases. The members of the division have joint appointments in other clinical divisions in addition. There are no clinical activities associated with this division per se. Immunologic diseases of childhood include infectious diseases, immune deficiency states, cancer, transplant rejection, allergy, and autoimmune diseases such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Basic science studies within this division are aimed at understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases in order to develop new diagnostic tests and therapies. Particular areas of interest within the division include antigen presentation, cytokines, and effector mechanisms. Clinical services for the aforementioned diseases are provided by various clinical divisions including Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, and Nephrology.

ICGEB Activity Report 2000 Mammalian Biology: Immunology Group Leader: Kanury V.S. Rao
email: kanury icgeb.res.in, fax: +91-11-26162316 Focus: immunobiology of B cells Targets: murine B lymphocytes. Key words: lymphocyte activation, humoral immunity, antigen-dependent selection F. Bayiroglu, A. Chaturvedi, S. Dhawan, V. Manivel, P. Nakra, K. Natarajan, N. Sahoo, P. Sharma, Z. Siddiqui, B. Singh The quality of an antigen-specific immune response is influenced by variables such as the nature of the antigen, the site of exposure, the nature of the antingen presenting cell, and the local cytokine milieu, among others. The situation is further complicated during infections where the pathogen frequently subverts immune-regulatory mechanisms to its own advantage. Our primary focus is to understand regulatory influences that can modulate the outcome of immune responses. On one hand, our interest in defining regulation of T-dependent B-cell responses continues. In addition to this, we have recently initiated a programme aimed towards understanding host-pathogen interactions during infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis Recent Publications Full extract from the 2000 Activity Report Manivel, V., Sahoo, N., Salunke, D.M., Rao, K.V.S.

study the genetic background of the immune system in fish. It has been shown that the humoral immune response in fish, particularly in cod, is poor in comparison to that of mammals and birds. We do comparative studies to try and find the reason for this phenomenon. We also do comparative studies on IgG and IgM between different fish and mammals.

DIVISION OF IMMUNOLOGY AND CELL BIOLOGY
RESEARCH ESSAYS STAFF Back to Index Page Introduction Cell-Cell Interaction Group ... Synthetic Vaccines Laboratory Introduction The Division of Immunology and Cell Biology is comprised of a number of research groups that investigate fundamental aspects of cell biology, with a major interest being the immune system. Research undertaken by the Division includes investigations of viral replication, analyses of the immune response to viral infections, development of HIV and cancer vaccines, studies of the processes involved in programmed cell differentiation and death, and research on the processes of haemopoiesis, inflammation, tumour angiogenesis and tumour metastasis. The pursuit of long term basic science goals make up most of the Division's work but this is balanced by attempts to translate fundamental discoveries into clinical applications. The latter include the possible application of anionic sugar molecules as novel anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer drugs and naked DNA and recombinant poxviruses as vaccines for prevention of certain infectious diseases or treatment of cancer. More detail of these various themes is given in each Group or Laboratory report. Professor Chris Parish, Head of Division
