Located within a short drive of the Shawnee National Forest, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale has earned international acclaim as the second largest comprehensive university in Illinois. Founded in 1869, SIUC maintains more than 100 finely tuned academic programs that lead to associate, baccalaureate, master's, specialist's, doctoral and professional degrees. About 22,418 students are enrolled in programs ranging from marketing and engineering to law and medicine. Interestingly, about 24 percent of the University's students come from the Chicago area. Regardless of their chosen field of study, students are challenged to grow intellectually in this supportive, but competitive, environment. John A. Logan College
John A. Logan College was created by public mandate in 1967 under the authority of the Illinois Community College Act of 1965. The College opened its doors to its charter class in the fall of 1968 and acquired its permanent grounds in the following year. Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1972, John A. Logan College now offers a wide variety of programs, including foundation courses for the bachelor's degree, technical and vocational curricula, and adult education classes and public service activities.
