"The Ifugaos of the highlands of Luzon have similar ideas: they posit the existence of five realms, the known world of humans being contrasted with a skyworld and an underworld and with a region downstream and one upstream... In marked contrast to this limited pantheon among the Semang, the Ifugaos, a horticultural people living in the mountains of Luzon, recognize some forty classes of different types of divinities. Perhaps as many as fifteen hundred different named supernatural beings have been identified for the Ifugaos, although not all beings are recognized in a single Ifugao community. "

One of the most exciting areas in the growth of African oral literary study within the last two decades has been the specialized interest in the continent's heroic epics: stories about great warriors, empire builders, and culture heroes like Sunjata among the Mandinka of Mali, Lianja among the Nkundo of Zaire, Shaka among the Zulu of South Africa, Ozidi among the Ijo of Nigeria's delta country, and many others. So widely has this interest growninvolving the collection of hitherto ignored epic texts and the critical study of themthat Indiana University Press, without doubt the sturdiest publisher of African studies in the United States, has seen fit to establish an African Epic Series to enshrine this body of work within the canons of higher education. With so much that has come to light, it is no longer possible to doubt, as was the case up to the 1970s, that the epic is a characteristic feature of Africa's oral traditions. And yet, if we took time to look beyond the walls of the academy, and projected our study of the epic within the larger context of the realities around us, we would find reason enough to temper our enthusiasm for this subject with a certain concern. In the more than three decades that African nations have been free from the colonial shackles that held them down for pretty much one century, most of them have been ruled by indigenous leaders who have done much worse to their people than the foreign usurpers. If we looked closely at the power profiles of these recent leaders, we would find them uncomfortably similar to the heroes we have grown accustomed to glorifying in our studies: leaders who held absolute power, exercising total proprietorship over the material and perhaps spiritual lives of those who lived under the shadow of their might.

NIGERIA - Introduction Land and Resources, The People of Nigeria Arts , Economy, Government, History III. The People of Nigeria In 2002 Nigeria's estimated population was 129,934,911, yielding an average density of 141 persons per sq km (364 per sq mi). At the last census, in 1991, the population totaled 88.5 million. Like previous censuses, notably the annulled 1962 and 1973 censuses and the hotly disputed 1963 census, the accuracy of the 1991 census was highly controversial. Before the 1991 census, the number of registered voters indicated that Nigeria's population was probably between 115 and 125 million—that is, about 30 percent more than claimed in the census.
With a birth rate of 39.2 per 1,000 and a death rate of 14.1 per 1,000, Nigeria's population is growing at an average of 3 percent annually—a rapid pace, and little changed from the 1970s. The average Nigerian woman gives birth six times in her lifetime, although among more educated women the rate is somewhat lower. Nearly half of Nigerians are younger than 15 years. By 2025 the population is projected to grow to 204 million, nearly double the current size.
The highest population densities are in the Igbo heartland in southeastern Nigeria, despite poor soils and heavy emigration.

Chapter Six Art in West Africa This chapter looks at art as it was created in the context of community life, an artistic form linked closely with spirituality. It also analyzes art subsidized by royals and describes how that art reflects a certain political economy. Art forms changed as states developed in West Africa, but it also changed with the arrival of Europeans. These changes are discussed as well as how African art has influenced European artists. West Africa stands high in art production. Such European artists as Vlaminck, Braque, Derain, Picasso and Modigliani (see Photo 6.1) were influenced by African art forms, as anyone familiar with their works can see. Since human beings make non-utilitarian things and perform music and dances that do not seem to produce an economic payoff, we might ask why. In West Africa, we cannot begin to answer this question without a knowledge of the social and religious context in which art was created, performed and displayed. West African artwork is usually a symbolic statement of social significance. It is often associated with secret societies. Many of their masks were used to instruct initiates and relate to various social responsibilities, such as fighting fires and making peace. http://witcombe.sbc.edu/ARTHafrica.html
