Homeschoolers, like all educators, often fall into the easy trap of spouting educational jargon until it becomes almost meaningless, especially to newcomers. We forget, perhaps, that everyone was once a newcomer. The term "unit studies" is an especially slippery fish of a term, because it can mean so many things. It may refer to a relaxed, interest led frolic through a subject, initiated by a child's interest in, for instance, cars. The child reads about cars, draws cars, examines the insides of cars, takes cars apart, measures cars, studies the math and science of cars, bakes and eats car shaped cakes, and builds a model car. The opposite extreme may be the child homeschooled with a traditional approach. His parents pick a unit study out of a book, or perhaps buy a unit study curriculum. The publisher supplies or suggests the materials, and the parent (as teacher) sits with the child, going progressively through the planned unit study. Most often, homeschool families fall somewhere in between these two examples.

Project FORUM at National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) is a cooperative agreement funded by the Office of Special Education Programs of the U. S. Department of Education. The project carries out a variety of activities that provide information needed for program improvement, and promote the utilization of research data and other information for improving outcomes for students with disabilities. The project also provides technical assistance and information on emerging issues, and convenes small work groups to gather expert input, obtain feedback, and develop conceptual frameworks related to critical topics in special education. This report was supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Department of Education (Contract No. HS92015001). However, the opinions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect the position or policy of the U.S. Department of Education, and no official endorsement by the Department should be inferred.

Tips For Including Children With Special Needs
  • Invite children with disabilities to join the fun. Send publicity information and flyers to special education teachers and vision and hearing consultants in the schools.
  • Programs for disabled children should be conducted in conjunction with nondisabled children, not in isolation
  • Program topics and themes should reflect the recreational and informational interests and needs of all children.
  • Programs may need to be planned and adjusted according to the intellectual, behavioral, and physical needs of children attending.
  • Program media and methods should be creatively varied for different learning styles (auditory, hands-on, visual, kinesthetic) to provide motivation and meet individual needs.
  • Use parents, teachers, and local agencies as resources for program materials and ideas for adapting them.
  • Physical facilities must be adapted and arranged to ensure the accessibility of all children. Aisles should be at least 36" wide to accommodate wheel chairs. Keep all aisles clear and unobstructed.
  • Use directional signs with large, simple print. In addition, use universal or easily recognized symbols for important public areas like restrooms and fire exits.

Benefits of Providing Quality Support for New Teachers
What Do New Teachers Need? Although there have been few large-scale studies of new teacher induction programs, existing data confirm that schools that provide high levels of support for beginners do retain more teachers (Goodwin, 1999). The Santa Cruz New Teacher Project (SCNTP), for example, which has been in existence since 1993, reports that 90 percent of participating teachers have remained in the profession (Moir, n.d.). Weiss and Weiss (1999) cite a 93 percent retention rate in urban districts that provide formal induction programs for beginners. Benefits for students and schools:
  • Stronger connections among the teaching staff, leading to a more positive and cohesive learning environment for students.
  • Less time and money spent on recruiting and hiring replacements (Halford, 1999).

Benefits for teachers:
  • Stronger classroom management skills (Educational Resources Information Center, 1986).
  • Ability to deal with behavior and discipline problems more effectively.
  • Increased job satisfaction for both new and veteran teachers (Moir, n.d.).

"Helping Horseshoe Bend" Dan Wright
AmeriCorps*USA Member
Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps Program
Horseshoe Bend High School
Horseshoe Bend, Idaho I lead a circular life. I usually drive off at 7:00 in the morning into the cold and dark with a cup of coffee in my hand. I sometimes don’t pull out of Horseshoe Bend until late, when it is cold and dark, and I have a cup of coffee in my hand. Everything that happens in between can be exciting, frustrating, rewarding, aggravating and unforgettable. It takes over a half hour each morning for me to reach my site in the small town of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. I like the drive. I use the time to prepare myself for day, to set my goals and make plans. I also prepare for what might go wrong. It isn’t easy working with at-risk high school students. They are usually frustrated and lacking motivation. They need help in almost every area. Their extensive needs is what makes my position at the school so interesting. As Horseshoe Bend’s first AmeriCorps member I was allowed to develop the position around my strengths and the most immediate needs. I haven’t been able to meet every goal, but AmeriCorps’ presence has helped the school in many ways. Horseshoe Bend applied for its AmeriCorps member through the Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps (ITAC) program. ITAC is an education based program that focuses on needs for people of all ages. Members serve throughout the state of Idaho, working as mentors and tutors. The sites range from schools to colleges to prisons. According to ITAC’s mission statement, "Current educational resources can’t meet the need of all Idaho’s students, especially those with special needs. Helping students stay in school, get better grades, learn about career opportunities, and become more productive citizens is the goal of the Idaho TRIO AmeriCorps program."
