Government By Ben In Greece they did not write down laws,(even thoughalmost every one could read and write) they were memorized.
    http://www.omsi.edu/teachers/schools/portland/winterhaven/bit/bit_soc.html
Government By Ben The Greeks were ruled by a royal family in 1200 B.C. but the Dorians took that away. After that there were 30 elders chosen from 60 people. There was 5 Ephors that took care of day to day things this was in Sparta. Athens was the first to become democratic; it was not it as we know today. In early Athens it was ruled by 9 archons taken from the higher class citizens, they had to own a cretin amount of land to be chosen. After 1 year they had to resign from this though, but they got to go to a certin type of club the Club of Rulers. They met at arco pagus (the hill of gods), at first they had much power, but it slowly decreased into nothing. In Greece they did not write down laws,(even though almost every one could read and write) they were memorized. In 621 B.C. Draco, an archon, wrote down laws. Draco was the first to do this. Some of these laws had such severe punishments that we still use the word Draconian to refer to laws with harsh punishments. By the 5th century B.C. the Athenians met every week, every male over 18 was allowed to: make a proposal, vote or speak. Much of the work was taken out by Boulel. The Boulel were a group of 500 men. These men were chosen at random to serve for one year. People could only be a member twice in a life time. In 322 B.C. Athens was taken over by the Macedonians this ended the way they worked. Economy As the Greek population grew they were unable to produce the amount of food needed to feed every one. Because of the rains the only crops that would grow well were olives and grapes. The Greeks exported the olive oil and grapes. They also exported silver from the mines at laurium near Athens. They also exported painted pottery. Athens traded for grain with Russia. Athens imported things from Egypt. The rowers on the boats were paid professionals.
