Greece uncovers 'holy grail' of Greek archeology
Nation euphoric over discovery of the Lyceum
January 16, 1997
Web posted at: 11:30 p.m. EST (0430 GMT) ATHENS (CNN) Excavators in Greece say they've stumbled across the Lyceum, the school where Aristotle taught his pupils science and philosophy 2,500 years ago. In essence, it's the birthplace of Western modern science and philosophy. It was here that Aristotle exhalted the virtues of a sound mind and body to his pupils. "We are very, very happy. This is a very, very important discovery. We have now, here, in Athens, the main proof about the historical continuity of the Hellenic cultural heritage," said Greek Cultural Minister Venizelos Evangelos. Considered the holy grail of Greek archeology, the Lyceum was discovered by crews preparing for the construction of a new Museum of Modern Art. "Aristotle stands at the foundation of modern European science and a great deal of European philosophical thought, and so it's extremely exciting just to know where Aristotle would have been walking, when he was teaching, what kind of rooms he would have been teaching in," said Dr. Jeremy Tanner, of the London Institute of Archeology. For 170 years, since Greeks gained independence from the Turks, they have scoured the landscape to find the birthplace of Western civilization.

Those tourists don't know what they are missing! Yes, it's true, there are only 15 columns still standing, but what columns they are indeed! The building was completed in 131 BC. It was a colossal temple dedicated the god Zeus. It is now an enchanting archaeological site with its little well-kept garden. You can see the Acropolis and the hoards of tourists from the temple. You'll feel like you're the only person on earth at the feet of its gigantic columns.

An Overview of an Ancient Society

The Culture of the Out Lands
Known only as the Out Lands, this primitive society was lost to antiquity until only recently. Through careful research and the help of numerous other educational organizations, we have been able to piece together what this tribal society was like.
The name, Out Lands translates literally to 'The Lands That Are Out'. They were outside what is now the Society of the Great Plains and their territory butted up against the Rock Mountains. While recent evidence shows similar societies in the Country of Hollywood, there has been no evidence to show that these people were the same as those that are discussed here.
These 'Outer' people, or Outerlanders, lived in primitive village societies. While we still have little evidence as to the daily life for these people, we have significant amount of evidence as to their public, 'ritual' lives.
The Outerlanders lived in a type of Monarchy, ruled by a King and Queen. Unlike Pre-Ancient cultures, their King and Queen were not decided by bloodlines but by a very strict ritual held twice-a year. In this ritual, each man in the tribe was brought forward to receive the 'Whomping Stick'. In a series of sharp blows, the new leader was the one who remained long enough to receive all their blows.

Greece is a country of contrasts, where every islands differs from the last - yet it's the mix of common factors that make magical. Often the first and favourite choice, Corfu has a very wide variety of facilities to suit all tastes. It's the most green and perhaps the least "Greek" of all islands. Gouvia has a pebble beach with lots of water sports and lively nightlife of discos, bars and restaurants. It's a good choice for an active holiday or a leisurely one.
