Should Government Teach Religion?
By M.Orhan Tarhan It was very heart-warming that the secular Yilmaz government was confirmed quite comfortably with a large vote surplus. It looks like it will last at least until the next election. Also the first important bill it pushed through the parliament, passed just as comfortably, in spite of the efforts by the Islamists and the majority of Ciller's party to prevent it. This bill increases the compulsory secular public education from five to eight years, which was high time. In the process, it forces the middle sections of the imam-hatip schools out of business. This has the advantage that the Islamists will not be able to brain-wash young kids of 6 - 8 grades at a tender and impressionable age. Once a youngster gets a good foundation of eight years of a secular education, he or she will be much more difficult to brainwash in an imam-hatip high school. Now there is a great controversy on how the government should provide the religious education to the children, while still giving them a secularist mentality. Prime minister Yilmaz is talking about separation of state and mosque. The Alevi organizations think that the government should not be in the business of teaching religion, since the government automatically teaches the Sunni version of Islam. Deputy prime minister Bulent Ecevit thinks, that if the government does not teach religion, that job will be immediately picked up by the Islamists and that is not acceptable. Thus, before anything is done, there is a need for clarity on which principles should be applied and what are the real problems.

Students Teach Good Government Editorial- New York Daily News Tuesday, May 30, 2000 LEGISLATORS IN ALBANY sometimes scoff that real reforms never become law because the public is just not interested. But now, along comes a nonpartisan group of high school and college students to prove them wrong. These young people are so interested that they've put photos of recalcitrant lawmakers on a special Web site and are running television commercials urging voters to throw the bums out. If voters join in, this could be the beginning of a real good- government revolution. Students4Reform, a group of interns working for Manhattan lawyer Charles Juntikka, has compiled a list of 27 state Senate and Assembly members, Democrats and Republicans, who have stalled such changes as campaign finance reform, bans on gifts from lobbyists, easier ballot access and an open budget process.

Voluntary sector has a lot to teach government
If the government is to succeed in establishing an effective strategy for disadvantaged youth, it needs to learn from agencies like Centerpoint, writes chief executive Victor Adebowale
Tuesday December 12, 2000
Over the past month, a plethora of announcements about the New Deal, beggars, drugs, rough sleepers and curfews for young offenders, have given the distinct impression that the government is worried about young people in our communities. The latest attempt to try to pull this area of social policy together comes in the form of the newly established children and young people's unit. And in the middle of all this, casting a long shadow, has been the death of Damilola Taylor. While our hearts go out to Damilola's family and local community, his death has justifiably provoked a response, and in some ways confirmed the feeling that "something must be done".

News Releases UK Government plans to teach us to produce and consume sustainably Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett has announced that the Government is developing a UK strategy for sustainable consumption and production, as part of a commitment made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in September 2002. The strategy is to be developed over the coming months, with the intention that it should be published in early summer, according to the Department for Environment. It will be developed in conjunction with stakeholders – these will include other government departments and the devolved administrations, as well as the Sustainable Development Commission, which this week has also published its climate change report. The results of the recent Strategy Unit report on waste (see related story ), the forthcoming report to Government from the Sustainable Procurement Group, and the Energy White Paper, will also be considered. One of the intended outcomes of the strategy is a set of proposals to help empower consumers. However, the jury is still out as to whether consumers want to buy environmentally friendly products, a spokesman from the Department for Environment (DEFRA) admitted to

US Government
Teach-At-Home The Foundation of the U.S. Government The U.S. Constitution established the three branches of the U.S. Government:
  • The Executive Branch - headed by the President The Legislative Branch - the Congress (Senate and House of Representatives) The Judicial Branch - the Supreme Court (and other federal courts.)

The Legislative Branch The Congress of the United States of America is the legislative branch of the federal government. Congress is responsible to pass the laws that govern the country and determine how money collected in taxes is spent. It is the president's responsibility to enforce the laws. Congress consists of two parts: The Senate and the House of Representatives.
The Senate The Senate has 100 members - two Senators from each state. The Constitution requires that the Senate have the same number of representatives from each state. In this way, small states have the same number of Senators as large states. Senators are elected every six years and there is no limit on the number of terms a Senator can serve. The Constitution requires a Senator to be at least 30 years old, a U.S. citizen for at least nine years, and a resident of the state from which they are elected

Watch a short video about RWU Camps The summer camp program is appropriately named after the founder of The John Birch Society, Robert Welch (1899-1985), who recognized the importance a proper knowledge of history and current events would have in preserving American liberty. Today, unfortunately, both public and private schools are bombarded with government regulation and educational requirements dictated by bureaucracy, and increased control over national education by promoters of globalism and one-world government. As a result, young Americans are being taught incomplete, watered-down, and misguided versions of the truth about our past and present.

Thought you might like this heart-tugger! Julie The Real Teachers Her name was Mrs. Thompson. As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie.Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and the F's on his papers. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around" His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."

These observations are in line with some of the writings of Marvin Olasky and Charles Murray. Olasky points to the effectiveness of local and voluntary charity and the use of "work tests" in the context of nineteenth-century poverty fighting. Murray focuses on the importance of building esteem as well as providing material assistance. Murray and Olasky both develop the idea that providing compassionate and effective assistance requires more than money. cannot as should not, Moreover, without exception, people become angry when the notion is applied to them. The irony of this, at least from a Christian perspective, is that Christians are called to be both the most and least loyal subjects of the state. When there is no conflict, believers are to submit to the state; when the two are in conflict, their primary allegiance is to God. sacredness it has never enjoyed, and
