History - Government Beset by a deteriorating economy, the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was overthrown by a coup in 1966. The ensuing years saw a succession of coups. In 1979 Jerry Rawlings led a military coup and after conducting a harsh anti-corruption campaign, stepped aside and permitted a return to an elected civilian government. Rawlings seized power again in 1981 and after free elections under a new constitution became president.
The current constitution is based on the United States model and was approved by a national referendum in April 1992. The President appoints his Vice President and nominates a Council Of 10 Regional Ministers one from each region and assisted by a regional co-ordinating council. Multi-Party democracy was restored in Ghana in May 1991.
6th March 1957 - Ghana gained independence under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of the Convention People's Party (CPP). On the 1st of July 1960 Dr. Kwame Nkrumah proclaimed Ghana a republic and combined the roles of President and Prime Minister.
24th February 1966 - General Joseph A. Ankrah was called from a forced retirement to head a new government of the National Liberation Council (NLC). This was after a military coup executed by a group of military officers headed by Afrifa and Kotoka.

Read and comment on this story from the Ghana I RPCV Bob Klein on the work he is doing to create an oral history of Peace Corps Volunteers and what you can do to get involved at:

    What is a Mythographer?
I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in 1961 with the first project to go overseas - Ghana I. Years later, in retirement, I thought it would be worthwhile to try to tell our story and I began to travel throughout the U.S., tracking down others in the group, plus our field staff, training faculty, and even those deselected. Whenever possible, I taped oral history interviews with each, focusing on their experiences in the Peace Corps. Researching the book also took me to the Kennedy Library in Boston and the National Archives in Washington.
The Project has evolved. To assist others in doing interviews and identifying collectable materials, there is a Project Guide. The present goal is to recruit project coordinators/facilitators for as many NPCA groups as possible. The various RPCV groups that are affiliated with the NPCA are the logical centers for building the archives, particularly the geographic area groups - Philadelphia, Southern Arizona, Bay Area, etc. However, country of service groups can also participate - here there may be an incentive to assure that the stories of a particular project are included in the archive. If Ghana is there, why not Micronesia, Lithuania, Iran? Although the 1960s era is a priority for practical reasons related to aging, the Collection welcomes materials from all generations of RPCVs, 1961 to the present.

    HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENTS
    1. At the first and second conferences of independent African States, held in Accra, Ghana, in April 1958 and in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in June 1960, respectively, economic problems to be faced by independent Africa were discussed. There was a consensus that the smallness and fragmentation of post-colonial African national markets would constitute a major obstacle to the diversification of economic activity, away from a concentration on production of a narrow range of primary exports, to the creation of modern and internationally competitive enterprises, which would satisfy domestic needs and meet export requirements. It was, therefore, agreed that African countries which had gained political independence, should promote economic co-operation among themselves. 2. Two options were advocated for the implementation of the integration strategy in Africa: a) the Pan-African, all-embracing regional approach, which envisaged the immediate creation of a regional continental economic arrangement; and b) the geographically narrower approach that would have its roots at the sub-regional levels and build on sub-regional co-operation arrangements to achieve geographically wider forms of co-operation arrangements.
    FORMATION OF COMESA
    1. The origins of the COMESA can be traced as far back as the mid-sixties. Before the Lagos Plan of Action and the Final Act of Lagos were adopted, the countries of Eastern and Southern Africa had already initiated the process towards creating an Eastern and Southern African co-operation arrangement.

    JOSEPH C. MILLER
University of Virginia South Asianists had earlier achieved a considerable degree of organization in the region, largely through the outreach activities of the National Defense Education Act Title VI center at the University of Virginia, led by historian Professor Walter Hauser. There was also a Southern Atlantic States Association for Asian and African Studies (SASAAAS), oriented more toward teaching and public outreach than the SSRC Seminar program, but nonetheless illustrative of the possibilities of a regional organization in the enthusiastic participation it enjoyed. There was also interest in forming a less structured Southern Association of Africanists in the region, led by Ann Dunbar and others in central North Carolina, and focused on teaching outreach. Ann Dunbar organized the last meeting of the Seminar's first year at the University of North Carolina on April 20, 1974, focused on discussion of Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, with copies provided to all members. Akpan (South Carolina State College) and Nyang presented papers, with comments by Sagay and Thornton. (See report to SSRC, Appendix IId.) Expenses totaled $308.99. On the strength of the benefits that all participants felt they had gained from the Seminar's first year, and indications of continued sponsorship from several institutions in the region, the group resolved to apply for an extension of the Seminar's SSRC funding. All the papers from the year were filed with the Library of Congress through the chief its Exchange and Grant Division (Nathan R. Einhorn).

    AAAS 106B Lecture Series
    Introduction to Class Part I
On the map of Africa, Ghana appears to be a small country. It is one of Africa’s smaller nations. (Even so, British publications, like Oxfam Country Profile of Ghana (2000), are quick to point out that Ghana might look small on the map, but is “roughly the size of the UK,” 238, 537 sq km. By 1998 estimates, its population is: 18.3 million.) Still, Ghana has a symbolic place in world history bigger than its size would suggest. It has been at the center of several world phenomenon-the history of kingdom/chieftaincy societies, the slave trade, resistance to colonialism, and the rise of African nationalism. In terms of recovery from a severe 1970s-1980s economic downturn, it is often cited as a country that has most improved. Most recently, its December 1999 elections have been written about extensively in the world press. So, size and impact are two different things when we come to the issue of Ghana. They are almost polar opposites. In this vein, this course takes two approaches to familiarizing you with Ghana. We will looking at Ghana’s smallness, its local character, its internal features, its place in regional (West African) issues. And, we will studying Ghana’s bigness, its role in important world movements and history.

Ghana Book Trust: A Brief History The Ghana Book Trust is part of the emerging network of non-governmental organizations in the educational sector in Ghana. Incorporated in 1990 as a non-profit organization, it operates as a charity of educational purposes. The GBT has identified shortage of books as a major weakness in Ghana's educational system and seeks to address this problem with the supply of local imported books to rural schools and libraries and needy urban institutions. Since its establishment, the GBT has in partnership with donor agencies worked in support of various educational initiatives in the area of rural library development and supply of donated books to schools and community libraries. The Ghana Book Trust was established by CODE (the Canadian Organisation for Development through Education), but in recent years CODE has stressed the importance of creating linkages and has been working with local groups that advise on potential projects. CODE's goal is to enable its overseas partners to become self-sufficient so that all educational literacy and post-literacy needs can be addressed from within the country. In Ghana, many recipients benefited in the past from the Direct Mail Bag method of shipping books, apart from CODE's major partners, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Catholic Secretariat and the Accra Technical Training Center.

Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol (in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution) ensures the closest possible co-operation between the "criminal police authorities" of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime. Joining Interpol was therefore one of the first steps taken by various African leaders once their countries obtained independence.
