Independent Ghana
Independence

Among the CPP's earliest acts was the outright abolition of regional assemblies. Another was the dilution of the clauses designed to ensure a nonpolitical and competitive civil service. This allowed Nkrumah to appoint his followers to positions throughout the upper ranks of public employment. Thereafter, unfettered by constitutional restrictions and with an obedient party majority in the assembly, Nkrumah began his administration of the first independent African country south of the Sahara.

The Second Coming of Rawlings: The First Six Years, 1982- 87

The new government that took power on December 31, 1981, was the eighth in the fifteen years since the fall of Nkrumah. Calling itself the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC), its membership included Rawlings as Chairman, Brigadier Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (whom Limann had dismissed as Army Commander), two other officers, and three civilians. Despite its military connections, the PNDC made it clear that it was unlike other soldier-led governments. This was immediately proved by the appointment of fifteen civilians to cabinet positions.
Opposition to the PNDC administration developed nonetheless in different sectors of the political spectrum. The most obvious groups opposing the government were former PNP and PFP members. They argued that the Third Republic had not been given time to prove itself and that the PNDC administration was unconstitutional. Further opposition came from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), which criticized the government's use of people's tribunals in the administration of justice. Members of the Trade Union Congress were also angered when the PNDC ordered them to withdraw demands for increased wages. The National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) went even farther, calling on the government to hand over power to the attorney general, who would supervise new elections.

Thayer Watkins Political and Economic History of Ghana The history of Ghana is one of sadness and tragedy, of unnecessay tragedy. The post-independence history is that not uncommon case of a charismatic leader feeding the populace on a fantasy that it takes decades to recover from. In Argentina it was Juan Peron. In Ghana it was Kwame Nkrumah. Before going into the details of the Nkrumah era it is helpful to get some perspective on the nature of the fantasy that has entrapped so many countries. A major legacy and burden of tribal and feudalistic societies is the notion that leaders have the power to solve problems and bring justice. The village chieftain takes resources from the villagers and to the powerless villagers the chieftain seems like a potential foundation of wealth and luxury. To those who aspire to be chieftain it seems that if only they could achieve that status they could not have a pleasant living but could do good for the villagers. In the American idiom they could be fairy godmothers , solving all problems with the waive of a magic wand. So the possibility of becoming a fairy godmother is a powerful motivation for those who seek leadership. On the other hand, for the powerless who have no hope of becoming a leader the notion of there being fairy godmothers who can solve all problems is likewise a powerful influence. But of course there are no fairy godmothers and can be no fairy godmothers. The resources that the village chieftain dispenses come only from the productive efforts of the people themselves. If the people neglect their own productive efforts in seeking benefits from the chieftain then soon even the chieftain has no resources.

The Status of Human Rights Organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa
    Ghana
CONTEXT In January 1993, after eleven years of often brutal military rule under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings was sworn in as a civilian ruler following a national election which brought him back into power. Rawlings won the presidential election with 58% of the vote as the head of a three-party coalition led by his own National Democratic Congress (NDC). A new constitution with institutional checks and balances came into effect after the election. Opposition parties accused the government of electoral malpractice and vote-rigging and boycotted legislative elections in December. The growth of human rights organizations in Ghana is a recent development, subsequent to the election. Most of the groups in Ghana are at a preliminary stage of formation, with the Ghana Committee on Human and People's Rights being the oldest. Most are constrained by inexperience and funding problems. Ghanaian human rights activists identify arbitrary arrests, detention, and restrictions on freedom of expression as common violations. However, since the election, they believe the situation has improved somewhat, although rights violations have by no means ceased. In the early part of 1993, police forcibly broke up a demonstration held by an opposition party to protest the budget. The new Constitution, which came into effect January 7, 1993, provides for a system of checks and balances, with an executive branch headed by the President, a parliament and an independent judiciary. The Constitution also provides for a Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to investigate alleged violations of human rights and to take action to remedy proven violations. The Commission was sworn in in October 1993, but to date has not taken a strong lead in addressing violations. At the same time, the government created a national media commission to ensure the freedom and independence of the mass media in Ghana.

Legal system based on English common law and customary law Legislative branch - unicameral National Assembly (200 seats) Elections - last held 2000. These elections ended the 20-year rule of Pres. Jerry Rawlings, the first time in Ghana's 43-year history that an incumbent government was changed through the ballot box.
    Pre-colonial History
The name of modern day Ghana was taken from the ancient kingdom of Ghana, which was one of the most powerful three West African states of Mali and Songhai. Its gloried period was between the 12 th to the 16 th centuries. In the aftermath of its defeat by the Songhai empire, most of its citizens, it is believed, migrated to present day Ghana. With the settlement along the coastal belt of present day Ghana, most of the inhabitants along the coast became traders and middlemen between European traders who peddeled their wares along the West coast and the hinterland traders who brought their goods to the coast to sell in exchange for European goods. Due to the very profitable trade in gold, the coastal stretch which forms the modern state of Ghana became known as the Gold Coast. The wealth of the coastal trade is attested to by the concerntration of forts and castles along this short coastal stretch representing all major European powers of time gone by.
The process of incoporating the then Gold Coast into a formalised relationship occurred on several multiple front concurrently. While the European trading companies supported by their states and mercenary armies fought amongst themselves and against the coastal and hinterland states and kingdoms, similar processes were concurrently taking place among the Gold Coast kingdoms. In the final reckoning, two powerful states were left on the coast, England and Denmark. On 31 December 1849, Denmark withdrew from her Gold Coast colonial expedition after almost two hundred years of turbulence. She sold her posessions on in Gold Coast to the English at the handsome price of ten thousand pounds sterling.

England, 1948 . Student International Clinical Conference (S.I.C.C.) was held as an initiative by the International Union of Students (I.U.S.) which was created directly after World War II . The Dutch medical students promised to host the next conference, but due to a conflict, the western student organisations left I.U.S. But still, the wish for a totally non-political international student federation is born. Paris, December 1950 . An international congress concerning the establishment of a possible federation was held, and Denmark was given the assignment to investigate the possibilities of receiving economic support from WHO. WHO was positive towards the federation but couldn't make any promises at that time. The students were encouraged to work out a plan of organisation with clear goals, aims and administrational proposals.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF GHANA NATIONAL COLLEGE A MESSAGE FROM HON. KOJO BOTSIO Fifty years ago Ghana National College was born through the indefat work and determination of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. At that time he was an ordinary Kwame Nkrumah. The newly -appointed harassed General Secretary of the United Gold Coast Convention. Little did people think that, that mini seed would grow into the mighty oak tree we see today. Never was a school founded under such trying circumstances as was encountered in the establishment of this School. Kwame Nkrumah was determined that those patriotic young secondary school students who had gone on strike as a revulsion against the detention of the 'Big Six' and had been sacked from school by the imperialist colonial Government of the Gold Coast should not loose their education. With the able assistance of some few men like the late Mr. J. E. Hagan and Chief Aggrey, Kwame Nkrumah with only ten pounds in his pocket and me as his Aide founded the School in the teeth of stiff opposition. The School was also lucky to have three patriotic young teachers in the persons of the late celebrated Kwesi Plange (1st Headmaster). Mensah-Kane (2nd Headmaster) and the versatile H. P. Nelson, all of whom at great personal sacrifice, financially and otherwise, worked with great ardor and determination to keep the school going.

The district possesses a relative wealth of natural resources and arable land. There are two rivers and coastal savanna grassland as well as developed forestry, electrical system, telecommunications structure, health and educational institutions. The Main Exports are Cocoa, gold, timber, manganese ore, diamonds, bauxite. Ghana is currently promoting investment in their countries infrastructure. Currently Ghana has signed an agreement with the State of Michigan for economic and cultural cooperation. Currently a Michigan based country has invested in producing a source of Energy production and many Americans are currently conducting business with Ghana. Within the Akuapim South district budding economic, cultural, health and educational ventures are being planned. There is a District Hospital which is linked to five clinics, four maternity homes, two eye clinics, an orthopaedic center and three private clinics.
