Parents do not need to feel they are alone in helping their children stay drug- free. For the first time ever, there are preventative intervention programs that have been proven to be effective and are available to schools, families and communities. Children have the best prospects for leading healthy, drug-free lives when schools support parents in their anti-drug message. There should be nothing confusing or contradictory in what children learn about drugs from the adults in their lives, and school policies need to reflect the same attitude toward alcohol and drugs that you express at home: Drug use is not acceptable. Drugs diminish a child's ability to concentrate and follow through on academic responsibilities, they cause loss of motivation and absenteeism, and students who use them can be disruptive and drain teachers' time and energy. The best way to ensure that the anti-drug policies at your child's school are strong is to be involved. You can:

The truth is that in elementary school parents are enthusiastically invited into the classroom to read stories, talk about careers, or bake cupcakes. During middle school, however, the school workload intensifies, leaving little time for parent parties. "Preparing teachers to work with families doesn’t receive the emphasis it did in elementary schools," says Sue Ferguson, chair of the National Coalition of Parent Involvement. "Schools expect less and they get less." Another difference is that the number of people involved in a child’s education increases. According to John Wherry, president of The Parent Institute, middle-level teachers see about 150 kids each day for about 45 minutes. This leads to a less personal relationship. "It’s a little harder to develop teamwork between parents and teachers when you have to get acquainted with five teachers," he says. What to Do?

hen schools work with families, children succeed. The Laurel-Concord Public Schools embraced this idea in 1995 when it developed programs to get parents more involved in their children's schools. "While our district's scores have always been good, we saw that the kids who struggled the most in school had the least support at home," says Superintendent Daniel J. Hoesing. "Sometimes it's because the parents didn't have a positive experience in school themselves. ... We teach parents how they can be involved, that they don't have to know the subject matter but that they do have to keep an interest in their child's schooling." The district decided that one way to connect parents with schools was through the Internet. In the Virtual Parent-School Partnership , parents can view their children's grades, attendance records, lunch accounts, and teacher comments on the district's Web site. They can click on a grade book and see if assignments were turned in, Hoesing says. Parents can request that daily, weekly, or monthly progress reports be sent to them by e-mail, and they can choose the level of detail they want in the reports. In 2001-2002, every student's record was accessed by parents. As of January 2002, 96.1 percent of pupils' records had been accessed. The information also is available through a telephone information system.

Read together
Children who read at home with their parents perform better in school. Show your kids how much you value reading by keeping good books, magazine, and newspapers in the house. Let them see you read. Take them on trips to the library and encourage them to get library cards. Let children read to you, and talk about the books. What was the book about? Why did a character act that way? What will he or she do next? Look for other ways to teach children the magic of language, words, and stories. Tell stories to your children about their families and their culture. Point out words to children wherever you go to the grocery, to the pharmacy, to the gas station. Encourage your children to write notes to grandparents and other relatives.
Use TV wisely
Academic achievement drops sharply for children who watch more than 10 hours of television a week, or an average of more than two hours a day. Parents can limit the amount of viewing and help children select educational programs. Parents can also watch and discuss shows with their kids. This will help children understand how stories are structured.

Young people have many stresses and the notion that "drugs will make you feel better" can have a lot of appeal. Also, youth might see drugs as something to experiment with or something that can help them fit in. Research has shown that many parents today are ambivalent about marijuana. Some consider it to be relatively risk-free and are more concerned about drugs such as cocaine or ecstasy. The wake-up call for parents, however, is that marijuana is not a harmless drug. The Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania's ( MHASP ) services and programs provide vital information and social and vocational supports to child, adolescent and adult consumers of mental health services and their families. Many of the programs are run by consumers, based on the principle that self-help and mutual support are empowering and that the best helpers for those in need are often those who have experienced similar problems. View a complete list of all services and programs at MHASP, or locate a specific service or program from the list below: In most cases, consumers participate in MHASP programs through a referral by either a case manger or their county's office of mental health. One major exception is MHASP 's nine consumer centers , which are open to anyone who simply wants to "drop in" and spend time in a warm and accepting atmosphere.
Vocational Programs
Vocational Programs help consumers prepare for part- or full-time employment. MHASP vocational programs teach job-readiness skills, including interviewing and resume writing techniques and how to dress appropriately. They also offer internships and ongoing support and counseling after a person finds employment. MHASP also works to recruit employers who will commit to providing employment to people with a mental illness.

The beauty of using the arts in educating students with disabilities is that, either way, the students end up with one critical, often elusive feeling success. Getting parents, the community and other teachers to see this, however, can be an art teacher's biggest challenge. "We have found that sometimes the product is not the thing, it's how we get our students to that point, to produce the product," Salt Lake City teacher Barbara Heglund said at the P. Buckley Moss Foundation's annual conference.. Working in a self-contained school for students with mental retardation and additional disabilities, Heglund and her co-teacher Mary Brow have developed dozens of lesson plans and activities incorporating visual art, dance and music to help students learn a variety of basic skills. Art activities can provide an alternative teaching approach when other methods fail, but schools often do not recognize they have other options, says Sally Smith, a longtime educator, lecturer and founder of

      A common plea heard throughout the nation is that we must put our "Children First!" That is, first in consideration for school funding, after school programs and physical protection. Politicians have been among the earliest converts to this type of thinking, as evident in the frequency with which the "educating for the future" and "Children First" epitaphs are used during election campaigns. Unfortunately, these notions are premised on the assumption that parents/guardians, as well as educators, already have all the tools needed in order to teach children how to be successful, safe and well-behaved students.
      For example, many parents/guardians believe strongly that no one has the right or the obligation to teach morality to others, especially to their children, citing freedom of expression and fear of excessive governmental intrusion as key motivators. While people of good intention disagree on whether these concerns are valid, the fact remains that parents/guardians believe (and rightly so) that the job of teaching children right from wrong is theirs.

THIS PUBLICATION IS SPONSORED BY CRAYOLA I The infant’s first play experiences are intergenerational, when adults smile at, tickle and talk to the baby in an effort to elicit a sustained and pleasurable response. Psychologist Jerome Bruner referred to infant social games as "action dialogues", since many properties of a verbal conversation are found in games: the players focus on the same topic and co-ordinate their actions. They learn to initiate and eventually terminate the game. Rolling a ball back and forth is a simple example of play as action dialogue. The richest play occurs when adults take an active role. The most creative children are those who have had adults involved in their play. When children play with adults, they display higher levels of language and problem solving skills than when playing with their peers. It is not only children who profit from playing with grandparents. Grandparents benefit too.

Saltwater Aquariums Hooking Students On Science
ANGLETON, Texas Saltwater aquariums filled with redfish are capturing the attention of Brazosport fifth-graders and helping teachers get students excited about studying science and conservation.
The aquariums are part of a project, called "Schools 'N Schools," that has placed aquariums in three of the Brazosport school district's middle schools Charlie Brown Intermediate School in West Columbia, Lanier Middle School in Freeport and Rasco Middle School in Lake Jackson. The aquariums are stocked with redfish fingerlings provided by Sea Center Texas and supported by a grant from the Texas Sea Grant College Program.
Rich Tillman, Brazoria County marine agent, said teachers use the aquariums to teach not only science but also reading, writing, arithmetic and art.
"We're using the fish to hook the children on the joy of learning," he said. "It's really neat to watch. When these little kids get around those fish tanks, they just beam."
The tanks were placed in the schools in October, and already, Tillman said, the redfish have doubled in size from 20 millimeters to 53 millimeters.
