64. Welcome To The Virtual Geography Texts On Canada And Germany
The Virtual geography Texts (VGT) on germany and Canada are not meant toreplace the traditional textbooks, but rather to complement them.
http://www.wlu.ca/~wwwgeog/special/vgt/English/welcome.htm
Virtual Geography Texts on Canada and Germany
Geography Links Welcome to the VGT Homepage Some general and educational remarks about the VGT: The Virtual Geography Texts (VGT) on Germany and Canada are not meant to replace the traditional textbooks, but rather to complement them. They are mainly designed for use in the North American and German education system. Official guidelines for geographic educational objectives and course outlines were consulted in detail for both Germany and Canada. The geographic content dealt with in the following text corresponds to the major geographic themes taught at the high school and university levels in both countries. Consequently the modules focus on the major geographic dimensions of the physical and human environments without claiming to be exhaustive and/or complete. The underlying pedagogical paradigm combines the classical regional and thematic approaches prevalent in geographic education. The intention of the following VGT is to provide short, concise, focussed and up to date information on Canada and Germany packaged into four thematic modules. These modules are subdivided into ten to twelve thematic and/or regional units. Each of these units can be used as a basis for a lesson in geography or social studies courses. The modules are to be about twenty pages in length but with a number of Internet connections to additional resource material. Most Internet references will be to English language sites but some may be in German and others in French, depending which language is being chosen for using the texts.

    Canada's Geography ...
Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada's land mass is 9 093 507 km2, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones. In addition to its coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada has a third sea coast on the Arctic Ocean, giving it the longest coastline of any country. To the south, Canada shares an 8 891 kilometre boundary with the United States. To the north, the Arctic islands come within 800 kilometres of the North Pole. Canada's neighbour across the Arctic Ocean is Russia. Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Welcome to our Geography of Germany page!
    Territory and Population of Germany.
Germany is the fourth largest country in Europe, after European Russia, France, and Spain. Germany has a total area of 356,970 sq km (137,827 sq mi), over 82 million people live there.
    Location of Germany.
Germany is bounded on the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; on the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; on the south by Austria and Switzerland; and on the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
    Climate in Germany.
Germany has a moderate climate with cool winters and warm summers, but it is humid and a little warmer in river valleys, and much colder in mountain areas. Average temperatures in Berlin are: -1° C (31° F) in January and 19° C (66° F) in July.
    Landscape.
There are low-lying coastal flats along the North and Baltic seas, hills and river valleys in the central area, and heavily forested mountains and snow-covered Alps in the south. Several major rivers and canals traverse this country and have helped make it a transportation center. Geography of Germany, being in the center of Europe, has made it a crossroads for many peoples, ideas, and armies throughout history.
