Many older gerbil care books contain information that is false, so when looking for a good book about gerbils it is best to make sure you get a recently published book with up to date information. Unfortunately, there are not many books fitting this description. Gerbils (Barrons Complete Owner's Manual)
By Englebert Kotter and Ehrenfried Ehrenstein, this book comes highly recommended by the UK's National Gerbil Society. It is a complete reference to gerbils by an experienced keeper, and follows others in the Barron's series in covering a wide range of topics about gerbils such as care, breeding, colors, and understanding gerbil behavior.
The Gerbil

Gerbils and Jirds

This book by Brian Leiper (chairman of the National Gerbil Society in the UK) is older and is hard to find. While some of the information is older, this book is unique is its coverage of various species of gerbil and jirds.

One text which uses this other system is The Mammal Species of the World (MSW) , maintained by the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, some choose to elevate the above two suborders within Rodentia to the status of order; recognizing, "true" rodents (squirrels, rats, mice, etc.) from the "hystricognath" rodents (chinchillas, degus, guinea pigs, etc.). This less widely followed scheme is more a semantic difference, as all the classifications recognize the same major lineages and relationships between these animals. TRAVELING WITH YOUR PET This section provides information and tips about pet travel. Included is a list of books as well as a bibliography of articles that may give you helpful information about traveling with your pet. We have also provided links to general information on pet travel and to pet travel requirements from some major airlines. OVERVIEW ARTICLES BOOKS AIRLINES ... LINKS
OVERVIEW
The best advice for traveling with your pet is to plan ahead. Have your pet checked by a veterinarian to make sure it is in good health for traveling. Be sure to take a copy of your pet's health certificate and proof of inoculation with you - these are required by many airlines and are also necessary when traveling to a foreign country. If you are traveling out of the country, please check with your travel carrier and the consulate of the country you'll be visiting for specific requirements well in advance. Many countries have quarantine laws regarding animals. Even within the U.S., it is wise to plan ahead, for example, Hawaii also has a quarantine law regarding animals entering the Islands. Below you will find some resources which may provide you with more specific information as well as travel tips.

Pet Care Tips:
Pets in Pockets
From the moment you hold a soft ball of fluff cupped in your hands, you're smitten. The nose twitches, the whiskers wiggle, and the eyes shine. A fragile, furry bundle of love has put its trust in you, and you have made a new best friend. Welcome to the world of pocket pets. Rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs, and ferrets are often called "pocket pets" because they are small, cute, and inexpensive. Their name is not meant to imply, however, that they're disposable or that they can be neglected. These small animals have specific diet, housing, and handling requirements, and they need care and attention just as much as a dog or cat. And if they're well cared for, they can also be just as much fun. No place like home
Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize
You can enrich your pet's environment and keep him comfortable and active with a number of accessories. A "hide box"a small box, tube, or other enclosed area where your pet can conceal himself-will make him feel safe and comfortable. Plastic tunnels, wheels, hollow rolling balls with latching lids, and other toys are available that can let your pet exercise. Make sure your pet is safe and can't get trapped inside or catch his feet or tail on a seam or a corner. Also make sure that the toys are made out of metal or durable plastic so your furry friend can't chew and ingest them. You can buy chewing blocks made out of wood or very dense pressed plant fibers for rodents. Rodents' teeth grow throughout their lifetimesthey chew constantly to keep their choppers filed down to a comfortable length.

Although there are many different species of Gerbil or Jirds/Girds in the wild the one most commonly available as pets is the Mongolian Gerbil. This species was first brought into the United Kingdom in the 1930's and 40's to be used in laboratory experiments - whilst being bred under these conditions they were tamed and domesticated with the first specimens released to the public as pets in the 1950's. In the wild these very sociable animals live in family groups or colonies, in their burrow systems that contain, nesting and sleeping chambers, separate food stores and a latrine area. These animals are not only active during part of the night but have periods of activity in the early morning, late afternoon and evening. Their life span is about 3 years, although many will reach 4, and some even 5 years old. The most common colour for a gerbil is agouti; this name comes from the agouti animal of South America, and is an overall speckled Brown and grey. This is achieved by each single hair having different colours along its length which when combined produce the final coat colour. Over the years and with selective breeding these colours have been separated out to produce the wide variety of colours that are now available.

32. Gerbils
One of the benefits you will gain from keeping your gerbils this way is that youwill only need to clean the tank out about three times a year Back to pet care.
http://www.btinternet.com/~grumster/html/body_gerbils.html
Gerbils G erbils are naturally tunneling creatures and follow a very strong instinct to dig. This is why you will have noticed that your gerbil is not happy in a basic hamster cage. An obvious sign of his frustration is his constant attempt to dig at the corners of his unsuitable cage. this is not because he is trying to escape he is simply following his desire to tunnel and all the while he is frantically digging through his sawdust he is inhaling the tiny dust particles into his lungs. Sawdust or shavings are therefor unsuitable substrate to use. When choosing a gerbil as a pet purchase two of the same sex as when infant they will grow up happily together. Gerbils are sociable creatures when raised together in pairs or in groups but never introduce a new Gerbil to an adult one as they will fight viciously. The ideal home for Gerbils is a 3'-4' fish tank The bigger the better. A wire mesh frame should be placed on top of the tank to ensure good air circulation. A platform should be made of wood with a ramp leading up to the platform on which you will place the food and water or a water bottle can be hung from the mesh top. The tank should then be filled with a mixture of mainly peat with added wood shavings and hay. This mixture should fill the tank approx. 3/4 full just below the platform. Pat it all down tightly, add your gerbils and sit back and watch with fascination your little pets tunneling to their little hearts content, you will never see a happier Gerbil. One of the benefits you will gain from keeping your Gerbils this way is that you will only need to clean the tank out about three times a year. Another is that you will be able to watch your pets through the glass creating their tunnels and watch them curled up in their underground nest fast asleep. Dont forget to add fresh bedding hay once and a while.

Owning a Ferret Ferrets can be a lot of fun, and under the right circumstances they can make wonderful pet. They are not the same as caring for a dog or a cat, and before getting one of these playful critters you should try to learn as much about them as possible. They are not, however, usually recommended in household with very small children. General Information Ferrets come in several different color schemes: the Fitch ferret is the most popular. Fitch ferrets have a buff colored coat with black markings on the face, feet, and tails. Albino ferrets are white with pink eyes. Some ferrets have a buff coat with light markings. The female ferret is called a jill, the male is a hob, and the infants are called kits.

I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to
