The Right Pet for You
Gerbils are bright and inquisitive, and fun to observe, but they need your commitment and regular attention. Before getting any pet, you should think very hard about whether you can provide everything it needs, including love.
What do Gerbils need?
Companionship - to be with other gerbils. Daily feeding on a diet of mixed grain and washed fruit and vegetables, with occasional sunflower seeds and peanuts. A constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water in a drip feed bottle with a metal spout. A large home called a gerbilarium (like a big aquarium tank with a wire mesh cover) that is kept indoors in a warm place, out of direct sunlight. Plenty of burrowing material (damp peat mixed with potting compost and chopped straw or hay) and clean white kitchen paper or soft hay for bedding.

Meet The Gerbils
Math was a cute litte gerbil. He was an intelligent and talented rodent. His brother Spelling wasn't so blessed in the brains department, however. I hate to say it but Spelling really didn't pull his weight around the aquarium (his pine shaving home). Math did all the work. While Spelling ate, slept, and played, Math kept the "house" up and weaved beautiful nests for them to sleep in. We would put the cardboard rolls from paper towels and toilet paper in the aquarium for the gerbils to chew on and run through. Spelling would do the chewing part but that was it. As soon as we would throw the cardboard in, Math would get on one side and Spelling would get on the other. They could shred a paper towel roll in 60 seconds. When they were done, Spelling would play or go to sleep; Not Math . He spent a good part of each day planning for bedtime. He would take the shredded cardboard and clean tissues that I would throw in and intricately weave them altogether in an incredible nest; much the same way a bird would except with different materials.

Hamsters are lively, clean, interesting to look at and happy to live alone. They can take time to become tame and need to have peace and quiet during the day because they are nocturnal.
What do Hamsters need?
To live alone. Daily feeding on a mixed diet of seeds, grains, nuts and washed fruit and vegetables. A constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water in a drip-feed bottle with a metal spout. A large home that is kept in a warm place indoors, out of direct sunlight. A nest box inside their home. The hamster needs somewhere it can burrow out of sight to sleep and hoard food. A clean layer of peat or sawdust on the floor of their home with soft hay and clean white kitchen paper for bedding. Do not use newspaper or cotton wool.

Gerbil Pet Care brought to you by Doolittle's Pet Stores... Caring for your Gerbil Gerbils are comparatively newcomers to the world of domestic pets. The species we recommend, Mongolian Gerbil, was first discovered in 1954 and has rapidly become established as a children's pet. Gerbils are friendly curious and animated. Properly handled they become tame and affectionate. They are happiest when kept in pairs as they are by nature "community" animals and a pair will usually pair for life if they are kept together all the time.
Two males or two females if brought at the same time will happily share a cage. A mixed pair will certainly breed.
A fully-grown Gerbil weighs 3-4ozs (80-100g). The average life span is 4-5 yrs. Housing
Your pet shop will help you to select a suitable cage. It should be roomy, escape proof, Gnaw proof and easy to clean.
A glass aquarium with a secure lid makes an ideal home.

Scientific name:
Meriones unguiculatus
Size: These busy little rodents are about four inches long, with a tail of the same length. But unlike mice, who have naked tails, gerbils have fur on theirs! (Gerbils are like mice and rats, however, in that they're all rodents.)
Color: In the wild, their color is brownish-gray, to blend in with the desert environment they live in. Pet gerbils are also available in a variety of colors, including white, albino and black.
Lifespan: Usually from three to five years.
Your pet gerbil will get really lonely if he's on his own, so it's a good idea to get at least two. If you introduce them when they're young, they'll be great friendsthat's why it's good to choose gerbils from the same litter. When adults who don't know each other are introduced, they may fight. And please keep males and females separated, or they will have babies. CHOW TIME!

Mice, Rats, Gerbills and Hamsters. These little sweeties are often chosen as pets for the first time animal guardian because they are relatively low maintenace and have gentle dispositions. Nutrition Commercial rodent pellets are available for Gerbils and Hamsters at pet stores. All four creatures have similar diets so if you have a rat, gerbil pellets are fine. For a more palatable diet, supplement the pellets with diced fruit and seeds, but don’t overdo it. These little guys have habit of filling up on the yummy stuff and ignoring the pellets, and eating that way will not satisfy their daily nutritional needs. Housing As the popularity of keeping small animals increases, more and more cages designed for them are appearing in pet stores all over. But, I recommend a glass aquarium with a screen cover. Ferrets - More like a cat than a rodent when it comes to care and maintenance.

Download this Book and Save Hundreds on Vet Bills!
We all want our beloved rodents to be happy and healthy. This means paying the vet hundreds of dollars for exams, right? No! Ask any vet the care your rodent gets at home has far more effect on his health than any vet exam. In fact, most vets give out advice along with prescriptions advice that could have prevented the illness in the first place! Wouldn't you like to have that advice now, before you have to hear it from your vet? Rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs all have different needs. For instance, guinea pigs cannot metabolize vitamin C on their own, so you must provide it in their diet every day, or they can develop serious, and even fatal, health problems. Rats and mice don't have this problem, however. Understanding your rodent's diet needs is easy, will keep him healthier and happier, and can prevent expensive treatments in the future. Note: we are not saying you will never have to visit the vet again! Vet care is important to your pet's health. However, with the care techniques in this book, you can prevent a multitude of costly illnesses with just a little knowledge!
