In "Gazetteers: Identifying Research Localities," Ancestry 12 (4) (July/August 1994), David Thackery notes the following: "Genealogy is, among other things, an exercise in geography. Successful research often hinges on identifying the locality in which one's ancestors lived. Once we know the locality, we are in a position to consult the records and histories for the area in an effort to piece together the lives of our forebears." Pinpointing modern place-names can begin with Frank R. Abate, ed., Omni Gazetteer of the United State of America , 11 vols. (Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1991). The work is subtitled "Providing Name, Location, and Identification for Nearly 1,500,000 Populated Places and Geographic Features in the Fifty States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories." Modern towns can also be sought in Bullinger's Postal and Shipper's Guide to the United States and Canada (Westwood, N.J.: Bullinger's, 1982) or

Research Tip 6: Gazetteers and Atlases
by Raymond S. Wright III, Ph.D., AG Printer-friendly version Learning Where Your Ancestors Lived Gazetteers and atlases can give you an idea of where your ancestors lived and which jurisdiction recorded events in their lives. Gazetteers often provide descriptions of towns and atlases help you understand your ancestral terrain. Hitting a black hole when it comes to finding information about your ancestors? At times researchers find their efforts stymied because they do not understand how various jurisdictions recorded the information. A jurisdiction is an area that falls under the authority of an agency or institution. Most of us apply to the state in which we live for a driver's license, but may register the deed to a newly purchased home with the county clerk. Non-government jurisdictions also recorded ancestors' lives. Forebears in a small village may have traveled several miles to a parish church for the christenings of children, marriages or burials. Their village may have had no church of its own, but was within the jurisdiction of a parish in a neighboring town. Learn the names of seats of jurisdictions that included the ancestral home town or village. Determine if archives or libraries in jurisdictional seats or state capitols have records that name persons who lived where your ancestors did.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library was begun on the private library of Clarence Monroe Burton, attorney, Detroit historiographer and founder of the C.M. Burton Abstract Co. Mr. Burton's original intention was to assemble a collection on the history of Detroit. Realizing that Detroit's history was inextricably connected to that of Michigan and the Old Northwest, and those histories to that of Canada and New France, he assembled a collection that was one of the most important private historical collections in the country. Over the course of 40 years, Mr. Burton systematically collected original documents and personal papers of prominent citizens of Detroit and Michigan. By 1914 the library contained 30,000 volumes, 40,000 pamphlets and 500,000 unpublished papers. Mr. Burton donated his collection, including the building it was housed in, to the Detroit Public Library in 1915. The collection was moved to the new main library in 1921. USING THE COLLECTION All materials in the Burton Collection are reference and cannot leave the reading room. Material is accessed through a number of card catalogs. Only items that have been added to the collection since 1987 are in the library's
