Getting Started
Maps are one of the many sources you may need to complete a family tree. In genealogical research, maps can provide clues to where our ancestors may have lived and where to look for written records about them. Beginners should master basic genealogical research techniques before starting to use topographic maps. Introductory books on genealogy suggest timesaving ways to plan, gather, organize, and record findings. To learn basic genealogical research techniques, it's best to start with the most concise, easy-to-read books, gazetteers, articles, pamphlets, and other sources that apply directly to the kind of research you plan to do. Books on the shelves of your local library may not include those that will best serve your purpose. However, many libraries and bookstores have the latest edition of Books in Print. Its subject guide gives the titles, authors, publishers, and prices of hundreds of books on genealogy. Many libraries also have directories that give the names and addresses of local, State, regional, and national associations of genealogists, historians, and ethnic groups.

We have some additional material relating to surrounding counties in southeastern Michigan, and have a large collection of materials on the Civil War. The library also has research method books, books on heraldry and family names, journals of several genealogical societies (including Oakland County Genealogical Society), as well as newsletters from local historical societies. History and Genealogy Department
The History and Genealogy Department, located on the second floor of Central Library , is responsible for service in subjects which include history, genealogy, heraldry, travel, biography, and geography. It contains over 25,000 volumes and 270 periodicals.
Nationally recognized as one of the major genealogical collections in the country, the genealogy and heraldry sections contain materials covering Missouri, Illinois, and those states east and south of Missouri whose population had the most influence on Missouri’s population. Most of the genealogy collection is for reference use only and cannot be checked out.
Also in the History and Genealogy Department is a collection of maps of countries, regions, and cities around the world which may be circulated. In addition, there are reference sets of large-scale Missouri and Illinois topographic maps, St. Louis and Missouri historical maps, and medium-scale European maps for the genealogists, as well as numerous atlases. Another 100,000 maps are located in the Map Room in the basement, and have to be retrieved by staff in this department or Government Information. Identifying the maps is easy using MapFind, an electronic database of the Library’s cartographic holdings, which will be searched by the staff for the customer.

ROAD ATLAS AS A REFERENCE:
A good contemporary road atlas can provide an excellent reference for
ancestors' areas of residence. Compare the contemporary atlas with old
atlases, maps, and other cartographic resources. If you can place the
original location on the old map, compare it to the contemporary atlas.
This will certainly help you verify current vs. previous county or country.
Make sure you then contact the old governmental entity for records, and not
the contemporary government. Your contemporary atlas should clearly show
towns, county and province boundaries, and topographical details such as
rivers, streams, roads and mountains for your use as physical reference points. - George G.
