1. HISTORY
The Bank of The River Gambia have been inhabited for many centuries. Hanno, The Carthaginean, referred to Gambia while writing about his voyage to West Africa in 470 B.C. It is known that between the 5th and 8th centuries most of the Senegambian Area came from the Sarahuley ethnic group, and those descendants can be found in The Gambia.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, there were protracted wars between the Islamic Marabouts and the Pagan Soninkis. The British, who already established themselves at Banjul by this time, offered protection to the various chiefs during these conflicts, and through treaties, soon brought The Gambia region under their control.
Before the British, some Portuguese had come to The Gambia following the expeditions promoted by Prince Henry starting in 1455. They had introduced groundnuts, tie main cash crop of today, cotton, and some tropical fruits from Brazil. Their number, however, was never large and the, were soon absorbed by intermarriage.

    The Land
The Gambia River is the country's dominant feature, flowing across a plateau of Miocene-Pliocene sandstone, compacted sediment composed predominantly of quartz grains formed from 23.7 to 1.6 million years ago. In the east, narrow valleys are separated by broad interfluves or flattish hills. In the west, lower and smaller sand hills alternate with depressions filled in with sand so that a flat plain is formed.
    Gambia River
The Gambia River in western Africa, 700 miles (1,120 km) long, rising in the Republic of Guinea and flowing westward through The Gambia into the Atlantic Ocean. Its major tributaries are the Sandougou and the Sofianiama. The Gambia is one of the finest waterways in Africa and the only western African river that is easily accessible to oceangoing shipping. It constitutes a unifying factor for the independent state of The Gambia, which consists of a narrow strip of land along both banks of the river. The political separation between The Gambia and Senegal (formally ended in 1982 by the confederation of the two countries) has, however, long hindered the development of the resources of the river and its basin. A first step had been taken four years earlier, however, with the establishment of the Gambia River Development Organization, initially composed of the same two countries (joined in 1980 by Guinea). From its source in the highlands of the Fouta Djallon, the Gambia follows a winding course to its mouth, which is a ria, or drowned estuary. The dividing and reuniting of river channelsa phenomenon known as braidinghas created several islands along the river's middle course, of which the two largest are Elephant Island and MacCarthy Island. The river is joined by numerous creeks called bolons, the largest of these being Bintang Bolon, which flows into it from the south. The width of the river's valley varies considerably along its course. The river valley is cut into a plateau of sandstone dating from the Tertiary period (66.4 million to 1.6 million years ago).

    About The Gambia
The Gambia is a small (4,000 square miles or 11,295 sq. km) country in West Africa. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides ( see map ), except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained it's Independence on February 18, 1965. Oral and written history give account of traders moving in caravans from the trading towns of the Niger to those of The Gambia about 400 years ago. People have been interviewed who said that their territories owed loyalty, to the Mali Kingdom. Mali was mainly composed of Mandinka speaking people. Written records also talk about the states of Niumi, Baddibu and Niani owing loyalty to the king of Saloum at Kahone in present day Senegal. Sine Saloum was composed of Wolof and Serer language groupings. Other written records speak of meeting Jola speaking communities on the south bank near the River Gambia 400 years ago. Written history indicates, that the inhabitants of Kantora had once claimed that they owed loyalty to the Ahmami of Timbo, ruler of Futa Jalon. History also teaches that Demba Sonko, king of Niumi hired 700 Serahule soldiers to maintain order in his state in the 1840s. The lesson is that Serer, Serahule, Jola, Fula, Mandinka and Wolof language groupings could be found in the place we now call The Gambia at various periods during the pre-colonial times. Some of these language groups had kings who established different states. There were no big Mandinka, Wollof, Fula, Jola, Serer, Serahule speaking kingdoms which involved only the members of each language grouping. Fulas, Serahules, etc, could be found in settlements where the predominant language was mandinka.

The Division of Geography, University of Derby organises field courses to a number of locations in the developing world as part of the curriculum and these are designed to ensure a better understanding of the world and its diversities. One of these educational visits involves a two-week field course in the West African State of The Gambia. This year's field course was undertaken during the period 23 March - 6 April, 2001. The Gambia field excursion, organised as part of our specialist programme - B.Sc. (Hons.) in Third World Development, involved visits to different parts of the country where both staff and students gained first hand experience and insight into practical issues affecting ordinary people in the developing world. Among other things, this year's field course covered a number of social, economic and environmental issues relating to Third World development struggles within the general context of the global political economy. Specific themes covered during the 14-day field trip include:
    • Familiarisation tour of the Gambia including the national capital -Banjul, Serekunda and other neighbouring towns/villages.
