Many of these maps reflect the European Age of Discoveries, dating from the late 15th century to the 17th century when Europeans were concerned primarily with determining the outline of the continents as they explored and mapped the coastal areas and the major waterways. Also included are 18th and 19th century maps documenting the exploration and mapping of the interior parts of the continents, reflecting the work of Lewis and Clark and subsequent government explorers and surveyors. Easier - There have always been explorers. Explorers are people who travel to or investigate unknown places. In traveling, they make or follow a route, path, or trail. Prehistoric men and women who ventured out across the continents were among the first explorers. Harder - Explorers are usually thought of as people who purposely visit and study an unknown geographic area. The golden age of exploration began in the fifteenth century as sailors from Europe ventured out and explored the world, locating routes across its oceans and continents and defining the earth's physical shape, size, and positions. Today however, explorers are persons who systematically search, examine, and investigate for the purpose of discovering unknowns in all aspects of our universe; making new discoveries and expanding frontiers in science, medicine, technology, and our environment.

    Lessons of the Explorers!
What kinds of people choose a life of exploration, adventure, and danger and where would we be without them? Your students will answer those questions as they investigate explorers and determine their impact on our world. Included: Eleven simple and successful classroom activities and two activities for families to share. Which Europeans explored Trinidad? Newfoundland? the Cape of Good Hope? Texas? Those questions are probably easy enough for your students to answer or to find the answers to. But once they have the facts, can they answer the more difficult and important questions: Who were the explorers really? What drove them? What sustained them? What impact did they have on our lives? They'll know the answers if their explorations have led them to Explorers of the World , a Web site that emphasizes the use of knowledge instead of just the knowledge itself.
