Reading, Writing and Computer Activities
Below is a list of Reading, Writing, and Computer Activities that must be completed as part of your English 051G assignments. The due date for all activities is the last day of instruction but do not wait until the last week to try to complete the work. You will not be able to do so. You must include this work as part of your weekly schedule. This set of activities is the remaining 1/4 of your final grade. The other parts are (1) Test and Quizzes AIMS , and (3) your T rade Portfolio There will be a worksheet or checklist provided for each of the activities below. The worksheets and checklists are to be kept in your AIMS folder at the Reading Lab counter; but as each is completed successfully, it is to be placed in the Appendix of your Trade Portfolio . Remember this work, for the most part, is in addition to AIMS and activities connected with your Trade Portfolio Your grade for this part of the course will be determined by the amount of work completed at a competency level, which like in AIMS is 80%. If you do not achieve 80% for an assignment within a program or print material, you need to repeat the activity until you do achieve 80%. This may appear to be an overwhelming amount of work; but if you attend class everyday and work hard each time, you will be able to finish all the work and receive a good grade.

Guided Reading Response Activities
Reading Responses:
  • are ways of taking notes from a whole lot of information.
  • help us to decide what information we need and what information we don't need in our search through the text.
  • help us to organise information in a structured way so it is easier for us to understand.
  • help us turn this information into new knowledge for ourselves.
Flow Charts
Return to the text and highlight the main events and dates that have led to Mother's Day today. Record the events in note form in the order they happened from the past to the present day. Events could be recorded pictorially or with a combination of pictures, symbols and words. Arrows are used to link events. This is an easier activity than a time line for younger children. Timelines
Return to the text and highlight the dates and main events. Record the events on a timeline. Timelines are a way of note taking when the information is chronological, written in order of time or date. Remember timelines are constructed to scale, (e.g. 1cm per 50 years) and will highlight long gaps in history, and cluster events that happen close in time. Students complete the timeline self-assessment when they have finished.

Raising a Reader
- Orville Prescott, from A Father Reads To His Children Nurturing a love for reading literacy Help your child learn to love reading. The key is to start early. Read out loud to your child regularly Another important activity for promoting literacy is using the library. Get a library card for each child and go often to select new books. Check with the librarian to find what is appropriate. Take the time to look at your daily activities and help your child see the connection to reading and writing . Cooking, reading food labels, playing word games, and writing stories can be helpful too. Give it the time it deserves . You may get tired of reading the same stories again and again but it is that repetition that is so important for your child. Children see adults around them writing and reading messages, notes, articles or books. This often makes them want to say their ideas out loud so you can write them down. At preschool age or older, children begin to write, using their own invented spelling or best guess.

The textbook-reading formula can be summarized in the mnemonic PR2. The "P" stands for pre-reading, the first "R" for reading, and the second "R" for review. The "R's" need to be repeated as many "times" as necessary until the material is learned. Pre-Reading Activities
Most people begin reading textbooks in the wrong way. After glancing at the title, they just plunge right in at the first word, paying little attention to meaning clues as they go, highlighting what suits them, and then closing the book right after reading. However, most people who use this approach to reading textbooks get little out of their reading. The first step in changing this ineffective approach to textbooks involves pre-reading activities. The pre-reading suggestions given here are only a few of those practiced by effective readers. These pre-reading activities are more than mere theories; they are means for seriously improving reading success. They can actually save study time.
Setting a Purpose
Setting a purpose is a key ingredient in reading success. The process may be very simple. "I will spend 30 minutes reading the first 10 pages in the sociology chapter on social interaction and five minutes reviewing important material." This pre-reading statement sets time limits, indicates the amount of reading to be done, and promises review time. Making a basic plan such as this puts one far ahead of those who do not set limits for their study.

READING APPROACHES
Most of what is known about reading comes from first language reading research. English as a second language (ESL) teachers need to consider how this research may or may not apply to reading in a second language. The following is a discussion of the approaches behind reading instruction. Psycholinguistic. Through the late 1960s and 1970s, the psycholinguistic or "top down" approach to reading, where meaning takes precedence over structure, became dominant. Although readers make use of sound-letter correspondence and syntactic knowledge, they draw on their experiential background knowledge (schema) to predict the meaning of the text and then read to confirm or correct their predictions (Goodman, 1967; Smith, 1971). Other reading approaches are also considered interactive (Grabe, 1991; Hudson, 1998). These approaches, often the subject of first language research, view the reading process as the interaction of both bottom up and top down skills. They focus on how the various aspects of reading (e.g., word recognition, eye movement, and background knowledge) contribute to the reading process.
