A Report on Genetically Engineered Crops
Revised July 2002
Charles M. Rader
This report is about two closely related subjects. One subject is the considerations for and against genetic engineering of our food. Although I will freely admit to a bias in favor of engineering, I have tried very hard to make this part of the report neutral and objective. The other topic is more important. Genetic engineering gets to the very core of how life works and people are inclined to have very strong feelings about it. Because the public knows so very little about science, some opponents of transgenic agriculture have been able to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion. As Donna Shalala told a group of scientists, speaking about genetic engineering, ``My concern is if we don't have a broadly educated public ... that charlatans out there will be able to play on public fears.'' Exactly that has happened. Almost everything the general public has been told about genetic engineering of food has originated in the deceptive presentations by skilled propagandists, many dishonest. Although the science behind genetic engineering is very complex, it is not so difficult for laymen to make reasonable choices with only very basic information.

WASHINGTON, (Sep. 20) IPS - While the biotechnology industry argues that genetically-modified crops will help feed the world, a new study here warns that widespread losses of plant species and varieties are eroding the foundations of agricultural productivity.
"Biotechnology is no solution to this loss of genetic diversity," said the report, released on Sept. 18 by the Worldwatch Institute.
Scientists increasingly have become skillful at moving genes around in order to make crops resistant to pests or yield greater quantities, notes the report's author, John Tuxill.
Only nature, however, can create such DNA the basic building blocks of life he warns.
"If a plant bearing a unique gene trait disappears, there is no way to get it back," said Tuxill.
With changes in agriculture, the irreplaceable resources that plant diversity provide are slipping away, according to the report, "Nature's Cornucopia: Our Stake in Plant Diversity."
In China, for example, farmers were growing an estimated 10,000 wheat varieties in 1949, but this number had dropped to 1,000 by the 1970s. In Mexico, farmers today are raising only 20 percent of the corn varieties they cultivated in the 1930s.

MONTEVIDEO, (Oct. 1) IPS - The impacts of genetically modified organisms on human health and the environment must be openly debated among governments and civil society, say Latin American and European scientists.
The need for this debate was proposed during the "Genetic Technology" seminar hosted by the Goethe Cultural Institute late September in Montevideo, and sponsored by the German government.
Presentations on various bio-genetic applications, as well as discussion of the relationship between ethics and genetics, were included in the conference program.
The strongest debate at the seminar arose from presentations on genetically modified organisms and their agricultural and food industry applications.
Discussion of this issue's legal aspects also provoked controversy, especially in light of negotiations underway at the United Nations on its proposed Bio-Safety Protocol.
Alberto Diaz, head of bio-technology studies at the University of Quilmes in Argentina, affirmed that genetics "have now become a technology more than a science."
"What ends up being debated are the industrial applications of genetically modified organisms," he pointed out.

Introduction
All Etruscan Engineering knowledge was inextricably entwined with the disciplina etrusca and the core of Etruscan religion. When I said that to a modern day engineer, he laughed and said, "What do you mean- They built something, then prayed that it would work ?"
Like many peoples of the time, including the Celtic druids for example, rituals passed down from the dark and distant past formed an intrinsic and essential part of the knowledge base for all walks of life. If it is accepted that the Etruscans origined in Asia Minor, then their forefathers would have come in contact with numerous ancient civilisations going back as far as the dawn of civilisation itself in Mesopotamia.
The rituals of Etruscan religion have much in common with the ancient Sumerian and later Akkadian civilisations. The examination of livers, and the assigning of sectors of the liver to sectors of the cosmos was one such common theme.
Land Improvement
The Etruscans had a deep knowledge of Hydrology and hydraulics, a knowledge which they put to good use in their many land drainage schemes. The lower lying portions of Rome such as the area between the Capitol and Velia was formerly marshland. Settlement of the low-lying ground would never have been a possibility without the hydraulic engineering skills of the Etruscans. This took place around 625 BCE when, according to archeological evidence a network of drainage channels was dug through the marshy ground, and at the same time, the stream that separated the two hills of the Capitoline and Palatine was regulated, its embankments were strengthened, and it was finally covered over.
