A male elephant in India sniffs a female's urinary-genital area to determine if she's in heat. (Pic: Bets Rasmussen.)
Having identified the sex pheromone that turns elephants on, US scientists have now figured out how this works in a study that may improve animal breeding and reveal more about how animals detect odours.
In 1996, Professor Bets Rasmussen at the tracked down the sex pheromone in female elephant urine. It was the first example of a sex arousal pheromone for a animal leading to copulation attempts. In the latest study, Professor Rasmussen and Professor Glenn Prestwich at The University of Utah , have identified the pheromone’s target: an odorant binding protein, and the chemical steps by which the pheromone and odorant binding protein arouse the male and later may cause this state of arousal to subside.
Their research is published in the current issue of Biochemistry
"For elephants we have now discovered the pathway by which the sex attractant gets from the female’s urine to the male’s sensory organ, thereby arousing the male in a highly visible, dramatic fashion," said Dr Prestwich.
Dr Rasmussen’s work showed the male Asian elephant first uses its trunk and regular sense of smell to sniff the urine of female elephants. The male then touches the urine-laden tip of his trunk to the roof of his mouth, transferring a drop to the vomeronasal organ (VNO), a foot-long chemical-sensing organ distinct from the elephant’s regular sense of smell. If the female is in heat and her urine contains the sex attractant pheromone, the male develops a penile erection and tries to mount the female.

http://www.search.lk/elephant/news/wild_e.htm
WILD ELEPHANTS IN SRI LANKA The Elephant and Biodiversity Forum by Jayantha Jayewardene Of greatest concern is the increasing demand for new land, which is limited. In 1881 the forest cover in the island was 84% of the land area. At the turn of the century it was down to 70% of the land area. Due to the increasing population, large tracts of forests have been cleared, mainly for settlement and agriculture. The forest area continued to decline. It was 44% in 1956, 27% in 1981 and at present is down to 22%. This shows a reduction of 62% of the first count in just 117 years. Sri Lanka has the Asian species ( Elephus maximus ) j udging from past records it seems that around 17,000 elephants have been exported destroyed and died in captivity in the 19th century. The number of elephants left in the wild at the beginning of the 2 th century is distressingly low. One assessment was 2000 animals. A survey conducted by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1994 revealed that there were about 2,000 elephants in the wild, except in the North and Eastern Provinces where this survey could not be conducted. The country has a wide range of terrain ranging from high central, cool mountains, to lush forests, beautiful beaches and also extremely hot arid areas. Since Sri Lanka has a warm tropical climate it sustains a wide variety of flora and fauna. Most of the wild life is concentrated within the

ELEPHANT Africa Unknown Throughout history, the elephant has played an important role in human economies, religion, and culture. The immense size, strength, and stature of this largest living land animal has intrigued people of many cultures for hundreds of years. In Asia, elephants have served as beasts of burden in war and peace. Some civilizations have regarded elephants as gods, and they have been symbols of royalty for some. Elephants have entertained us in circuses and festivals around the world. For centuries, the elephant's massive tusks have been prized for their ivory. The African elephant once roamed the entire continent of Africa, and the Asian elephant ranged from Syria to northern China and the islands of Indonesia. These abundant populations have been reduced to groups in scattered areas south of the Sahara and in isolated patches in India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. Demand for ivory, combined with habitat loss from human settlement, has led to a dramatic decline in elephant populations in the last few decades. In 1930, there were between 5 and 10 million African elephants. By 1979, there were 1.3 million. In 1989, when they were added to the international list of the most endangered species, there were about 600,000 remaining, less than one percent of their original number.

The elephant population has fallen in recent years
By Alastair Lawson in Colombo Wildlife officials in Sri Lanka have embarked on the second stage of a pioneering scheme aimed at releasing orphaned elephants back into the wild.
Some doubt the project will work
They hope that the project will increase the number of wild elephants in Sri Lanka, which is now estimated at about 3,000. Sri Lanka's elephant population has fallen in recent years due to human encroachment, poaching and the destruction of their habitat because of the civil war. For these five young elephants in Udawalawe in the south of Sri Lanka, it was a last meal before freedom. As the animals drank jumbo-sized buckets of water, all the preparations for their release into the wild were complete. The elephants were specially scented with their own dung so that all trace of human odour was removed before their return to the jungle.

ELEPHANT EXPERIENCES
FIRST HAND OBSEVATIONS OF ELEPHANTS ( and some other animals) IN THE UDA-WALWE PARK Most of the interactions I have had with elephants and other wild life is in the Uda-Walwe National Park of Sri Lanka. This park is situated in the south-east of the island and is about 30,000 hectares in extent. It is really the main part of the catchment area of the 3,400 hectare Walawe reservoir which forms a part of the park's southern boundary. The the resevoir is fed from the Walawe river which is dammed and the catchment waters released for downstream irrigation. With abundant sources of water and a rich and varied range of lush vegitation, the park is safe haven to about 350-400 wild elephants.Just outside the southern boundary there are large sugar cane plantations, and an electrified fence keeps marauding elephants at bay. A large adult male elephant browsing in the lush manna grass. This thick and abbrasive grass grows abundantly all over the park and can reach up to 2 meters in height. It often can camouflage the elephant almost completely, and viewing them can be very difficult. This particular male I have named "Scallops" because both his ears have neat symmetrical tear marks, like a scallop cut off. He should be about 35-40 years old and one of the more mature bulls in the park. Notice also the heavy pinkish pigmentation around the ears, front of the trunk and neck, a characteristic predominent in the mature Sri Lankan species of elephant. This is "Magic", the tallest elephant in the park, according to my estimates. He must be at least 3.25 meters tall with a high dome and forehead as is typical of all male asian elephants. Notice also the convex shaped back, steeply sloping downwards, another typical male feature in Sri lankan and asian elephants. ( In the african elephant the profile of the back tends to be more concave)

Baby elephants return to wild
Eight orphaned baby elephants are being returned to the wild in Sri Lanka under a special programme. The number of orphaned elephants has risen sharply in Sri Lanka after two decades of civil war in which elephant herds have often left behind their young when fleeing shelling by rebels or government troops. Adult elephants have also often fallen victim to landmines and booby traps while their offspring survived. The first group of four such elephants were sent back to the wild in 1997. The programme became so successful that Kenya has now started a similar programme. There are reports another is being planned in southern India.
