However, few realize that there are sacred places of equal importance in North America as well. Native American tribes, much like other prehistoric societies, viewed certain sites as sacred, and some have been embellished just as extensively as their more famous counterparts in Europe, North Africa, and South America. In the Western United States, an ancient people known as the Anasazi created a civilization that stretched from New Mexico and Arizona to Utah. Anasazi is a Navajo name meaning "Ancient Ones" or "Ancient Enemy". A more recent term used to more accurately describe them is Ancestral Pueblo People. However, the term Anasazi is more widely known and accepted, and thus will be used for the purposes of this page. During the Classic Pueblo period (c.1000-1300 A.D.), the Anasazi culture reached its peak in pottery, weaving, and architecture. They disappeared around the year 1300 A.D. - all that remains of their culture are their dwellings and the few clues remaining there. Mariam took the opportunity during his recent visit to France to find J. Doresse in his house in Fayance, about 926 km from Paris, and conduct an interview with him. J. Doresse, 85, is a renowned historian specializing on Egyptian and Ethiopian history. He had published a number of books on ancient and medieval history of Ethiopia including ''Ethiopia under the Kingdom of Queen of the Sheba'' and ''The Prester John of Ethiopia''. J. Doresse, who has spent much of his life time in Ethiopia, pioneered the French Archaeological study on Ethiopia and the center for the Ethio-French studies. He was also Editor-in-chief of the first French newspaper in Ethiopia "L'Ethiopie d'Aujourd'hui". J. Doresse is currently writing a book on the people of southern Ethiopia. CHAPTER ZERO Never - but nearly! miles Over the years, there were quite a few journeys which I almost made. This is a selective list of some of the more interesting destinations, and clues as to why they didn't take place. Of course, many other places nearly featured on this list. I have tried to be as fair as possible and only include places where I genuinely thought I would go. Lagos was a city I nearly got to visit on a couple of occasions, and it could have been quite exciting there. One major problem with all work in Nigeria is that of Foreign exchange, and the question whether anybody will ever get paid in a useful currency. Tel Aviv looked promising as a destination, though one with certain political disadvantages. The courses I had attended in Paris had an advanced course in Tel Aviv, but I was not able to attend because it clashed with my honeymoon. Zimbabwe and Zambia were thus added to the list instead. Malta might have been fun too, but again the problem was that the prospective hosts decided to send their staff to Great Britain instead. Even so, these people do make useful contacts, and I may follow them up one day anyhow. We had also considered a routing via Malta with Air Malta for a holiday, but it was cancelled when my wife became pregnant.
