The History of Plumbing - Egypt
F rom ancient times, the rise and fall of the River Nile portended periods of famine or good fortune for the peoples of Egypt. Other than wells, the River Nile is the only source of water in the country. During an idyllic year, the flooding of the Nile would begin in July, and by September its receding waters would deposit a rich, black silt in its wake for farming. Before taming the river, however, the ancient Egyptians had to overcome the river's peculiar problem. The Niles runs along an alluvial plain, the ebb and tide of the Nile corresponding to an annual movement of the ground. When the Nile is the lowest, the ground completely dries up. When it floods, the water seeps into the dry soil and causes the ground to rise as much as a foot or two like some bloated sponge. As the inundation subsides the ground settles again to its original dry level, but never settles evenly. The name Egypt means "Two Lands," reflecting the two separate kingdoms of Upper and Lower prehistoric Egypt - Delta region in the north and a long length of sandstone and limestone in the south. In 3000 B.C., a single ruler, Menes, unified the entire land and set the stage for an impressive civilization that lasted 3,000 years. He began with the construction of basins to contain the flood water, digging canals and irrigation ditches to reclaim the marshy land.

Ancient Egypt is perhaps the most facinating of the ancient civilizations. Even the Ancient Greeks thought themselves to be a young and inexperienced society compared to the Egyptians. Indeed, the Ancient Egyptian civilization was one of the longest in the west, beginning in approximately 3000 B.C., and lasting until nearly 300 B.C. What is amazing about the Egyptian's culture is not their rapid growth and development, but their ability to preserve the past and prevail with relatively little change. For example, today in the United States we drastically change the style of our clothing each decade, while Egypitan dress did not vary over the thousands of years. Theirs was a civilization where the past lived in the present. Ancient Egypt is a starting point in the history of western art. Pyramids and sphinxes have become symbols of Egypt, but a closer look reveals artistic genius in many forms. This web site focuses on Egyptian Religion, Cultural Life, and Art. Last updated on 09-Mar-2003 , see my New additions page I am afraid that the coming war with Iraq will be the beginning of World War III due to the fact that, as history should have learned us already, a struggle between two religions always escalates in a long period of extreme dislike and mistrust. This coming war will be the beginning of the FINAL setlement betweem Christianity and Muslims. The fight between a Dogmatic and Intolerant religion (Muslims) and a more or less Evoluated religion (Christianity). (l.c.geerts February 2003)
Will history be written today ?
Is the world ready for World War III ? Is this the beginning of the final settlement between Muslims and Christianity ? I predict that when the USA and Great Britain attacks Iraq without approval of the UN the Younger generations of the Muslims in the WHOLE Western World will start terrorist attacks against their host-countries all over Europe and the USA. History should have learned us that in a time the political and economical climate is as bad as it is now, men always look for a victim.

Alexandria, the shining pearl of the Mediterranean , and the beacon radiating its culture and heritage to the world at large
The second largest city and the main port of Egypt , Alexandria was built by the Greek architect Dinocrates (332-331 BC) on the site of an old village, Rhakotis, at the orders of Alexander the Great . The city, immortalizing Alexander's name, quickly flourished into a prominent cutural, intellectual , political, and economic metropolis, the remains of which are still evident to this day.
It was the renowned capital of the Ptolemies , with numerous monuments. It was the site of the Lighthouse , one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World , as well as the Great Library . It was along these shores that history took a tragic turn at the time of Cleopatra Julius Caesar Mark Antony , and Octavian.
Alexandria lies north-west of the Nile delta and stretches along a narrow land strip between the Mediterranean Sea and Lake Mariut (Mareotis). It is linked to Cairo by two major highways and a railroad line. It is one of the most notable summer resorts in the Middle East , for, in addition to its temperate winters, its beaches, with white sands and magnificent scenery, stretch for 140 km along the Mediterranean Sea , from Abu Qir , in the east to Al-Alamein and Sidi Abdul Rahman, in the west.
