    Geography
Ecuador, the smallest of the Andean Countries, owes its name to the equator that passes to the north of the capital, Quito. The country offers the visitor a multitude of different natural areas: The Highlands (Sierra) are made up of two high mountain ranges, running in a north-south direction. They essentially consist of 30 volcanoes, the West Cordillera (Cordillera Royal) and the East Cordillera (Cordillera Oriental). Nine volcanoes are still active today, with varying intensity. The high basins lying between both mountain ranges were used intensively for agriculture even before the Incas; the alluvial earth, fertilized with volcanic ash and coupled with a climate that is mild year-round, offers optimal conditions for agriculture. Quito , the capital of Ecuador, at a height of 2.850m, and situated in one of these high basins, is the economic focus of the region. It is also the starting point for trips to Otavalo, the rain forest, along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, Cuenca or down to the Peruvian border.

There are 3 continental regions in Ecuador: Coastal, Montain, and Amazonian. In spanish these regions are referred to as la Costa, la Sierra and el Oriente. Our region of focus will be on the Oriente, literally, the East, which lays east of the Andes mountains and include both the Upper and Lower Amazon Basins. The tropical climate in the amazon basin averages about 25C with 500cm of rainfall. [source: Amazon Crude- J. Kimmerling] We have compiled these different maps in this section: CLICK ON EACH IMAGE FOR LARGER VIEWING SIZE Ecuador covers 280,000 km, and is about the size of Colorado or Nevada. It is located on the western side of South America between Peru and Colombia. Ecuador has many rivers that contribute to the floodplain of the Amazon Basin. Ecuador takes its name from the fact that it stradles the equator. Although Ecuador is a very tiny country it can take more than a full day to travel from one corner to the other by bus. Click on this image to see a zoomed in version that indicates the many provinces across the country. Map of Ecuador This map of Ecuador shows you its location in relation to South America; its three main regions divided into coastal, mountain, and rainforest; previously disputed border regions (prior to 1999), and the Galapagos Islands.
