The Massacre of Withdrawing Soldiers on 'The Highway of Death'
This report was made on May 11th, 1991, at a session of the New York committee for investigating war crimes

I want to give testimony on what are called the "highways of death." These are the two Kuwaiti roadways, littered with remains of 2,000 mangled Iraqi military vehicles, and the charred and dismembered bodies of tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers, who were withdrawing from Kuwait on February 26th and 27th 1991 in compliance with UN resolutions

Australia at War
As the war in Iraq appears to draw to an end, the role of Australian troops deployed in the Arabian Gulf undergoes a transformation

With the action moving away from the sea and into densely populated areas, Australian Navy ships find less and less targets for their guns. In fact, two Australian frigates active in the first days of the conflict have been called back. They will be replaced by HMAS Sydney leaving for the Gulf Monday

Drugs today have proliferated amongst various social, cultural and economic strata, however certain groups of society are more vulnerable to this peril than others. Workplaces fall in this "vulnerable" category wherein workers have been identified as high-risk groups.
Workplace prevention forms an integral aspect in our war against substance abuse and fight for a drugfree society. NAVJYOTI in collaboration with Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and International Labor Organization, Norway has taken up a project on "Mobilizing Small Business to Prevent Substance Abuse" which has been successfully implemented in 12 industries at NOIDA, an industrial township on the outskirts of New Delhi.
The primary objectives of the project are to develop necessary administrative, technical and resource capabilities in the participating centres. The project supports small business communities to develop the substance programme with a view to integrate drug prevention strategies and programmes into the management practice of participating enterprises. The overall objective of the project is facilitating the adoption of prevention programmes in small and medium business establishments. A focal unit has been established in Minda HUF Ltd., one of the participating industry with the support from Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.

Alcohol drug prevention Program. The Alcohol and drug prevention program has takenthe lead role in creating a Public Health Department Prevention Consortium.
http://www.co.alameda.ca.us/publichealth/organization/programs/alcohol.htm
The Alcohol and Drug Prevention Program is a community-based prevention program using primary prevention strategies to alleviate alcohol and other drug problems. The program is based on the historic health model: AGENT - a potentially harmful substance or organism such as alcohol or drugs, HOST - the person or persons effected, including neighborhoods and communities, and ENVIRONMENT - social, political and physical surroundings. Major Service Areas Through contracts with community based non-profit agencies, this program uses systemic change strategies focused on public policies, social norms and customs regarding alcohol and drug use and related problems. A variety of specific strategies are used to carry out this overall goal:
  • Influencing Public Policy, Social Norms and Legislation
  • Changing Organizational Practices
  • Creating and Nurturing Coalitions and Networks
  • Educating and Organizing Service Providers, Community Groups and Public Agencies.
Intervention on these levels maintains a strong "upstream" focus on health problems. It recognizes the critical importance of promoting health and preventing illness rather than merely treating individuals who have already fallen victim to disease. This program provides a critical, parallel health promotion presence along side traditional, individually oriented medical and behavioral approaches to alcohol and drug issues.

FAQs CONTACT US Youth Drug Prevention
Although it's never easy being a teenager, today's teens seem to have a lot more to handle. All of the pressures they face can lead to low self-esteem and destructive behavior like drug and alcohol abuse. In fact, a top concern of many parents in this country is to keep their kids away from drugs. Unfortunately, this can be a real challenge, particularly when parents need to address it without support of their own. Community Involvement Preventing drug abuse is a big job one that must be embraced by the entire community. Studies have shown that the most effective strategies for preventing drug use happen at the grassroots level and involve individuals AND community groups. Community coalitions are a great way to help prevent drug abuse in your community. A community coalition is an alliance of local groups who share a desire to create positive change in their community, and to make it a safer, healthier and happier place for all to live.
