The following tips can go a long way towards raising a child to be...drug free!
Communicate daily with your children. Discuss what problems they have had or are now encountering as far as alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are concerned. Remember, listening is the key to good communication.
Healthy examples on our part are what influences our children's behaviors. Consider how your attitudes and actions may be shaping your children's choice about whether or not to use illicit substances.
Involve yourself in church, parent groups, and your children's school. Know their friends and their friend's parents.
Love your children unconditionally. No matter what your children do or how they behave love them anyway.
Devote more time to your children. Whether it's homework, reading, sports, or just plain old conversation, give them attention that shows you truly care. Reinforce the dangerous and tragic consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Teach and practice refusal skills.

Drug-Free Marshals!
The Church of Scientology International created and launched the "Drug-Free Marshals" youth drug-education and prevention program in 1993, a program to educate children as young as 6 on the dangers of drugs, and to challenge them to remain drug-free. They demonstrate their commitment by being "sworn in" as Drug-Free Marshals, pledging to remain drug-free and to encourage their peers to do the same. The campaign rapidly spread internationally, Since its inception, in excess of 19,000 people have been sworn in as Drug-Free Marshals in cities and towns throughout the United States, Canada, united Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and Europe.

CAMH Best Advice Paper
Alcohol and Drug Prevention Programs for Youth: What Works?
Introduction
Most young people have experimented with some form of substance: alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs. Some have gone on to use drugs frequently or to misuse them in a way that causes problems in their lives. This has long been a concern of parents, teachers, public health agencies, police and others. One way to help young people is to develop effective prevention programs that can not only help them immediately, but also set the stage for better health throughout their lifetimes. For parents, educators, service providers and policy makers the question is, What works? How do we reach young people and help them live a healthy lifestyle? There is no secret formula, but many options have been tested and evaluated. Programs that recognize the reality of adolescent substance use, and that focus on reducing the potential for related harm, are more likely to be successful than programs that focus on abstinence alone. This document reviews different approaches to education and prevention, and outlines a number of practical implications.
Trends in Substance Use
A number of studies have tracked adolescent substance use, giving us a revealing picture of the drugs young people use and how they use them. Surveys of students in several jurisdictions indicate that, after an increase in the early 1990s, youthful substance use has levelled off. However, even with the increases, overall substance use is still lower than it was in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This is true for other provinces and the United States, as well as Ontario. Currently, the use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs is relatively stable.

SONOMA VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
ABOUT THE PROJECT:

(From The National Training Center for Middle School Coordinators)
Schools and communities face an urgent challenge to design effective solutions to the complex problems of violence, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. To assist schools in the selection and implementation of effective prevention programs that are responsive to their needs, the U. S. Department of Education has undertaken several initiatives designed to enhance schools’ understanding of what works, while also expanding the inventory of effective programs.
Among these initiatives is the Safe and Drug-Free Schools' Middle School Drug Prevention and School Safety Coordinator Program. This initiative supports the recruiting, hiring, and training of full-time staff to oversee implementation of drug prevention and school safety programs for middle school students. The Sonoma Valley Unified School District was awarded a grant to pursue this initiative in Fall 2001. "Project STRONG" was the name given to the proposed initiative, with STRONG as the acronym for "Students, Together and Resilient, Operationalizing Nonviolence and Growth."

Drug Abuse and Drug Prevention for Parents and Teachers
If you are a parent or teacher looking for drug abuse and drug prevention information and resources to prevent teenage drug abuse in your home or school, you've come to the right place. Thanks for visiting the "Dangerous Drugs" information site. You're going to hear about two new and deadly drugs endangering your kids at school. One drug looks, smells, and tastes like candy. It's a deadly threat to any kid who likes candy. The other is being sold as Ecstasy and is killing kids all over the country. P The US Department of Health says about 20 percent of 8th graders, 40 percent of 10th graders, and 49 percent of 12th graders smoke marijuana. Three percent of 8th graders, 6 percent of 10th graders, and 11 percent of 12th graders take the potent mind-altering drug LSD. These kids come from all walks of life, some go to small private schools, others go to huge public schools, but they all have one thing in common: their parents didn't have a clue they were using drugs. Rave clubs and dance drugs such as Ecstasy kill younger kids every year. They're attracting kids as young as twelve years old. Drug dealers are substituting a new and deadly drug for Ecstasy and other dance drugs. It's usually too late before someone realizes he or she's been tricked. A mother found this out when the drug killed her teenager daughter on Mother's Day. It has already killed over thirty kids. The good news is, you can make sure your kid isn't next.
