Dominica was occupied by Carib Indians when Columbus discovered it in 1493. It was colonized by the French in the 1600s. The capital is Roseau. The terrain is so mountainous that the island has been called "the Switzerland of the Caribbean," with volcanic peaks, waterfalls, geysers and boiling volcanic pools, such as the Boiling Lake, the second-largest actively boiling lake in the world, and the Emerald Poo, in Morne Trois Pitons National Park. About 49% of Dominica is covered by dense rain forest, of which 80% are in its natural state. English-speaking St. Lucia has striking scenery, from attractive, secluded beaches with warm water and soft sand to unspoiled interior rainforests. The island's capital is Castries. Archaeological finds on the island indicate that St. Lucia was settled by Arawaks between 1000 and 500 BC. Around 800 AD migrating Carib Indians conquered the Arawaks and established permanent settlements on the island. The first attempt at European colonization was in 1605, by British and later French settlers, and the conflict had lasted 150 years, during which St. Lucia had changed flags 14 times and finally ended in 1814, when St. Lucia was declared British, and later gained independence in 1979.

October 23, 1999 Listen with RealAudio Need audio help? Back in the 1950s, all of Kinshasa, Congo was on the look out for the newest and hippest sounds. That's when somebody brought out their Cuban records, and the whole country went crazy. So, soukous is African, but based on Cuban beats which, actually, come from Africa. Confused? Well, maybe that's the point. It's a big, beautiful, musical mish-mash. And next week the masters of this rhymthic melange will all be in Dominica, at the World Creole Music Festival starting October 29th. The festival runs three whole days and nights! and it features music of African and French descent, like soukous from Congo or zouk from the Caribbean. It's educational, sure, there's even a symposium, but it's really about dancing. Just listen, move to the beat, free your mind, and you can bet your confusion will just melt away. Dominica likes to call itself the "Nature Island of the Caribbean, " and this island lives up to its eco-tourist publicity. Lush, tropical rain forest blankets much of the island, the Morne Trois Pitons National Park alone covering about 17,000 acres. In a landscape straight out a hiking boot commercial, trails bordered by large ferns and wild orchids lead to waterfalls, rivers – and one of the world's largest boiling lakes. It's a birdwatcher's paradise, home to rare Sisserou and Jacquot parrots and numerous, stunningly colored hummingbirds. Dominica (pronounced Dom-in-EEK-ah) is sometimes confused, at least by postal clerks, with the much more populous Dominican Republic about 500 miles away, but if its wilderness you're looking for, this is the one to remember. Field Notes DIVING CULTURE Carnival celebrations on Dominica are more loosely organized than, say, Trinidad's, and that's a large part of their charm. The two-day fete of calypso and street jump-ups leading up to Ash Wednesday features street parades of colorful costumed bands on Monday and "T-shirt bands" on Tuesday. And if you can't attend Carnival itself, check out the weekly "Stardom" and "Band Splash" events that showcase Calypsonians and bands preparing for the event.

The islands are geographically divided into "inner" and "outer" chains. The inner islands are volcanic in origin, and are characterized by rugged, mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall and lush vegetation. The high points of these islands are generally in the center, except for a few spectacular sheer slopes on some coastlines. High points of elevation vary from 1,000 to 5,000 feet. The outer islands have a coral limestone base and are relatively flat and less rainy than the inner islands.
Dominica is the largest and most northerly of the Windward islands. It lies between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. Its terrain is rugged and mountainous with considerable annual rainfall and extensive rainforest.
St. Lucia is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. It lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is situated to the south of Martinique and the north of St. Vincent. It is a volcanic and mountainous island whose highest peak is Morne Gimie (3,145ft).
Antigua's 108 square miles (280 sq. km) are mainly coral based and low lying, but the south is particularly fertile, with undulating hills of volcanic origin. The highest point (1,319 feet, 405 m) is at Boggy Peak. The coastline is deeply indented and provides many natural harbors.

Ras Mo Brings Caribbean Art and Culture to the Community
By Laura Gardner Ras Mo is a 21st century renaissance man. He combines his talents as a drummer, singer, performer, storyteller, recording artist, actor, poet, and community activist. Born in the Eastern Caribbean island of Dominica and visitor to many of the neighboring islands, Delmance "Ras Mo" Moses settled in the Bay Area five years ago, where he has established a solid foundation and community spirit in all that he does. Click the play button below
to view a movie clip from
Ras Mo's drumming class. Currently Ras Mo does youth work and batterer treatment, "I work with an organization that does batterer treatment, which treats men who have been abusive–adult men who have been abusive towards their partners or young men who have been abusive to their partners, moms, siblings, or whoever at home," he said. "I work with prevention. We prepare curriculum for schools, juvenile prisons and similar places. It’s more about prevention or early intervention rather than treatment. We use performing arts–drumming, music, poetry, storytelling–to deal with gender socialization and how we see ourselves as men, how we see ourselves as women, and how we relate based on what we’ve been taught."
