It has its own charm and some sightseeing like " The little mermaid ". The National Stadium, Parken is north of the city and called . It's known for having many different minorities. return to : country venue The exhibition Geography and Memory is the result of a collaboration between the Danish artist Doris Bloom, born and bred in South Africa, now living and working in Copenhagen, Denmark; and the South African artist William Kentridge. Both were born in the mid-1950s and grew up on the Transvaal Highveld. Expressive power, drama and a bold colourism are characteristics that describe the pictorial universe of Doris Bloom. It is these qualities that have made her one of Denmark's most noteworthy talents in the visual arts. William Kentridge has studied in the liberal, visual and performing arts, and more recently in animated film. Both artists have exhibited extensively in South Africa as well as internationally, and are represented in numerous museums and public collections. The core of this exhibition is a dialogue between the two artists conducted, partly by fax between Johannesburg and Copenhagen and various other points in Europe, and partly through an intense working relationship. This dialogue traces their shared points of contact in a South African childhood and areas of divergence in the different worlds in which they now live. The project was conceived in the early months of 1994 and culminated in August with the completion of a short 35mm animated film, of white drawings on a black background. Maps, place names, a geography of the mind, objects of childhood and current thoughts, are the raw material of the film, which manifests itself as a series of transforming constellations and star maps. The film will be shown throughout the Biennale at sites in the greater Johannesburg area. Drive-in screens, billboards, and the sides of buildings will be the 'venues' of these drawings in the sky. On a much smaller scale, these constellations will be seen in other unexpected sites: down a manhole or through a shop window.
