    INTRODUCTION
Background: Once the seat of Viking raiders and later a major north European power, Denmark has evolved into a modern, prosperous nation that is participating in the political and economic integration of Europe. So far, however, the country has opted out of some aspects of the European Union's Maastricht Treaty, including the new joint monetary system.

The Quarternary Period (1.6 million years ago-present day)

The Danish landscape was formed largely during the last ice age and the time thereafter. Beneath the present landscape, however, are rocks and deposits from much earlier times.

    The Deep Structure [top]
Crystalline rocks, which comprise the oldest component of the basement, extend beneath the entire country at varying depths. The crystalline basement reaches the surface on the island of Bornholm that forms part of the Fenno-Scandian Border Zone which runs in a northwesterly direction through Scania and the Kattegat to North Jutland. The present relief of the basement is the result of movements in the Earth's crust which took place long after the basement itself had been formed.

    The Precambrian Era [top]
The crystalline basement dates back to the Precambrian era, and consists of gneiss and granite created by metamorphic and igneous processes deep in the Earth's crust in connection with mountain-building events. In places, black dolerite dykes cut through the gneiss and the granite. The Bornholm basement was formed at the same time as the basement in southeast Sweden, some 1,750-1,500 million years ago. The basement in the rest of Denmark, which has been studied in a small number of deep borings, is much younger. It is comparable to the basement in the south of Norway and the west of Sweden which was formed some 1,150-800 million years ago.
