high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
  • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
  • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
  • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
  • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

CLIMATOLOGY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Graduate studies in Climatology at Delaware lead to the Master of Science (MS) degree in Geography/Climatology and to the Ph.D. In Climatology.
Climatology at Delaware considers all aspects of the energy and water budgets of the earth, with emphasis on the interactions between the atmosphere and the land surface. Graduate study in Climatology also involves exposure to a wide range of research methods that can be used to help solve climate-related environmental problems. Faculty and graduate student research interests span the range of Climatology and include: climatic modeling, synoptic climatology, atmospheric dynamics, climate dynamics, physical climatology, water-budget climatology, paleoclimatology, climatic geomorphology, glaciology, global climate change, human impacts on climate, and climatic influences on society, particularly on human health and socioeconomic activity. A distinctive feature of the graduate programs (especially the Ph.D. program) is collaboration among faculty and graduate students on research and subsequent publication.

The DOE Professional and Curriculum Standards portion of the Delaware Department of Education 's site contains frameworks, content standards, and sample activities (often searchable by grade) in most subject areas. The site also has links to standards for both teachers and administrators.
  • National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. Each subject has its own page that contains findings from related assessments, answers to basic questions about assessment, and standards and frameworks links. The NAEP site contains the following results (and the year last administered): the arts (1997), civics (1998), geography (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), math (2000), reading (2000), science (1996;the 2000 results are due in the fall of 2001), US history (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), and writing (1998).

Real Time Calibration of WSR-88D Weather Radars
Speaker: Dr. David R. Legates, University of Delaware, Center for Climatic Research (October 25th) Abstract: One of the main components of the DEOS system is SMARTS the Spatial Meteorological Analysis in
Real-Time System. Since 1995, some version of the SMARTS system has been used to provide real-time estimates of
precipitation. This system utilizes the national network of WSR-88D weather radars to provide precipitation estimates,
calibrated with measurement bias adjusted raingage observations. Calibration of the radar data is accomplished by a robust,
objective approach. Radar-estimated precipitation is acquired from the Digital Precipitation Array (DPA), which is used to
provide the spatial "footprint" of the storm while gage data are used to calibrate the radar estimates (i.e., to adjust the
reflectivity-to-rainfall relationship "on the fly"). Legate' (2999) procedure is based on a model of potential biases that lead to

POSITION: Geology/Geography Department - Delaware City Trails and GIS Project Assistant
SUPERVISOR: John Krygier
TERM: Full Year, 6 hrs/week
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play a vital role in understanding and analyzing geographically referenced information in a diversity of fields, including planning, environmental management, business, law enforcement, transportation, and politics. Spring semester of 2000 saw the beginning of a collaborative project between Dr. John Krygier (OWU Geology-Geography), OWU students enrolled in Krygier's GIS course, StAP student Bernadette Dethier, Rowland Smith (member of Delaware Parks and Recreation Advisory board, and Delaware City Trails Master Plan Committee), and Randy Smith (City of Delaware Director of Recreation) to develop a GIS database for a Master Plan for Recreational Trails in the city of Delaware. Randy Smith has now produced a comprehensive Trails plan, and students are assisting Smith in collecting detailed data to support the plan.
EXAMPLES OF POSSIBLE ASSIGNMENTS/DUTIES:
  • Updating project GIS databases, and coordination of data collection and other work completed by students in the GIS course; incorporating such data in the GIS database.

History

Geography
... VISITORS CENTER City of Wilmington, Delaware Wilmington is strategically located approximately mid-point between New York and Washington. Philadelphia's International Airport, the Greater Wilmington Airport, and Amtrak's main east coast line provide national and international accessibility. Three major interstate highways, excellent state highways and scenic U.S. routes link Wilmington to the entire east coast. One third of the nation's population and income is within a 350 mile radius of the City. Wilmington is home to more than 72,000 people of diverse backgrounds. Wilmington is often referred to as the "corporate capital of the world". Over half of the Fortune 500 companies call Wilmington their corporate home. The unique synergism that exists between government, business and labor has successfully addressed the issue of infrastructure rebuilding, leading the City to its position as financial, governmental and corporate hub of the State and region. Efficient mass transportation, ample parking and a dynamic environment for more than 40,000 workers who live, work and play downtown, are evidence of the City's rebirth. A number of public/private partnerships have contributed to an outstanding growth record.
