    Czech Republic
The Department of Geography field excursion visited Prague and the Czech Republic during the midterm break, the group being led by Drs Parker, Brady, Mills and Mendel and Ms Susan Hegarty. The focus of the excursion was urban and environmental issues in the newly liberalising economy. Housing and retailing developments were examined in Prague. Environmental issues were highlighted particularly in a tour (above) of one of the largest open-cast brown coal mines in the former central and eastern Europe, a mine which necessitated the relocation and the rebuilding of the town of Most. The historical development of a number of urban areas was also studied, including a day in Vienna, drawing comparisons between two Hapsburg capital cities. More recent aspects of Czech history included a visit to Terezin WWII concentration camp, and the remnants of the Iron Curtain on the Austrian border.

The Recapitulation of the Czech Republic GeographersActivities by the European Union Dimension Realization in the Geographical Education in 1990 2000. Prof. Doc. RNDr. Arnost Wahla, CSc., Ostravian University Geographers and geography teachers of primary and secondary schools, and universities of the Czech Republic responded in their professional and general geographical preparation to processes of political, economic, social and societal changes that took place in the world, on the European continent and in the Czech Republic.
  • Geographers with the New Aims of Geographical Education Realization
Geographers became acquainted with the new aims of the geographical education, they have accepted them and placed them into the educational programmes and into the educational process. These aims were formulated by international organizations. Geographers accepted all changes in the world political map that happened after 1990 /Germany, USSR, Czechoslovakia, Jugoslavia/ and they began a completely new conceptual teaching of the Regional Geography. The main chances appeared in the European regional geography teaching, where not only traditional teaching of the geography of the continents was included. The new structures that have appeared here are: European Union Geography, Geography of the European countries that stream to be members of the European Union, Geography of Euroregions. The production of textbooks and atlases was very progressive, too. Over 80 geographical textbooks for primary and secondary schools were published / not only in the framework of today educational programmes but for all continents too /. Maps of the European Union have been placed to some of the school geographical atlases.
