CYPRUS - A CULTURAL MOSAIC
First of Two Parts Story and Photos by Sandy Katz Travelin' Sandy Katz is a freelance writer based in Charleston, South Carolina. She has visited over 250 destinations and writes for many USA publications. Sandy who has a degree in psychology resides on the Ashley River with her husband. For 9,000 years it's been said to visitors - "Kopiaste" - Welcome to Cyprus, but it's been heard before by Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, Saint Paul, King Richard the Lion Heart and Leonardo da Vinci. Very few places can match the rich mosaic of history, art and culture that makes Cyprus world famous. There you see spectacular Neolithic settlements, Greek temples and Roman theaters, restored Crusader castles, Venetian fortresses, early Christian monasteries, Stone Age ruins and Byzantine churches. Tourists marvel at the golden icons, colorful frescoes and archaic statuary that still exist today. UNESCO has declared nine of the Byzantine churches in Cyprus and the town of Pafos as World Heritage Sites. But modern cultural interests can be found at the museums of Cyprus, featuring works of late 20th Century artists while theaters showcase contemporary drama and elegant concerts under the stars.

85. CYPRUS - A CULTURE MOSIAC PART TWO
It comes as no surprise that with a history so ancient, cyprus is remarkablyrich in culture. Hardly a week passes without a celebration of some sort.

CYPRUS - A CULTURAL MOSAIC
Second of Two Parts Story and Photos by Sandy Katz Travelin' Sandy Katz is a freelance writer based in Charleston, South Carolina. The 1000-year-old capital should be on every visitor's must-see list. It lies roughly in the center of the island, within easy reach of the other towns. During the Venetian expansion eastward in the 1500s, Nicosia was fortified with imposing stone walls and massive gates. The famous Famagusta Gate still stands today, proudly protecting the still ancient town within from the modern city without. Through the gate lies Laiki Geitonia, an old section that has been lovingly restored. Wind your way through narrow stone streets where crimson flowers cascade down from window pots and the aroma of traditional baking wafts through open doorways. For history and art lovers the Cyprus Museum will be very interesting with its priceless treasures from the first stirrings of the Neolithic Age through the Roman period. At the Byzantine Museum is a dazzling collection of early Christian icons from the Mediterranean Golden Age. These icons were so mesmerizing that I made an extra effort to find out more about them. Icons are sacred stylized images of Christ, the Virgin Mary and a panoply of saints, which have always had a central place in the Orthodox Church. In Cyprus, worship of the Madonna replaced obeisance to Aphrodite.

By Carol Olechowski When the government of the Republic of Cyprus needs expertise in instruction and in research and development, it turns to the University at Albany. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Judy Genshaft is delighted about the "longstanding partnership" between Cyprus and the University. "What began as an archaeological dig many years ago – I believe it dates back to the 1970s – has turned into a dynamic relationship," said Genshaft. "The Cypriot government sends us students for graduate training, funding them based on out-of-state tuition. We then use these funds to engage our faculty on projects of interest to the Cypriots. These projects have included a review of science teaching in grades K-12 and the assessment of the accreditation process for private institutions of higher education in Cyprus. We are also sending teams of researchers to work on issues of public health and social welfare. "The relationship benefits Cyprus because it builds on a cadre of well-educated students who go back and work within the ministries of the Cypriot government. The government gets first-rate technical assistance from our faculty. We at the University benefit. We get exceptional and highly motivated graduate students, and our faculty get engaged in projects that have significant impact overseas. It increases our global visibility in many ways, leading to an increase in general student recruitment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels." Faculty who have participated in the program are also enthusiastic. Along with W. Paul Vogt of the School of Education, the physics department’s Susanne M. Lee visited Cyprus in March 1998 to improve science education at the middle and high school levels. Lee, director of the University’s Metastable Materials Manufacturing Laboratory, said the partnership "brought together people from disparate fields who, by working together, learned different methods that might be useful in their own field."

*Yemeni (Traditional Head Scarf); Yemeni was widely worn by Turkish Cypriot woman. It was a symbol of richness. The material for Yemeni was produced at home by using thin cotton thread and was finely decorated with pretty symbols of flowers, leaves, and branches. The edges were sown with various motifs. *Lace-Work of Lefkara; This is one of the most important handicrafts of Cyprus. The linen that is to be worked on is first tied and stretched on a pillow. Different techniques like cutting out and sewing in shapes are used to decorate the final product. After the motifs are completed, an arch is sewed all around the lace. In the past, they mainly used for personal use. Currently, they are produced mainly for economical purposes, and are sold to the tourists. *Hesap Works; Hesap works were produced both for economical and personal use. This name is given to these works because while decorating them with different motifs, each strand is counted one by one.
