How Racial Identity Affects School Performance A Harvard professor connects research on race and schooling to his experiences as a student and father
By Pedro A. Noguera When I am asked to speak or write about the relationship between racial identity and academic performance, I often tell the story of my eldest son, Joaquín. Joaquín did extremely well throughout most of his early schooling. He was an excellent athlete (participating in soccer, basketball, and wrestling), played piano and percussion, and did very well in his classes. My wife and I never heard any complaints about him. In fact, we heard nothing but praise about his behavior from teachers, who referred to him as "courteous," "respectful," and "a leader among his peers." Then suddenly, in the tenth grade, Joaquín's grades took a nosedive. He failed math and science, and for the first time he started getting into trouble at school. At home he was often angry and irritable for no apparent reason. My wife and I were left asking ourselves, "What's going on with our son? What's behind this sudden change in behavior?" Despite my disappointment and growing frustration, I tried not to allow his behavior to drive us apart. I started spending more time with him and started listening more intently to what he had to tell me about school and his friends. As I did, several things became clear to me. One was that all of the friends he had grown up with in our neighborhood in South Berkeley, California (one of the poorest areas of the city), were dropping out of school. These were mostly Black, working-class kids who didn't have a lot of support at home or at school and were experiencing academic failure. Even though Joaquín came from a middle-class home with two supportive parents, most of his reference group—that is, the students he was closest to and identified with—did not.

Teacher Tips
Living Things is a comprehensive topic with many sub-topics. The resources in the "Living Things" unit are categorized according to the following scheme. "Individuals" deals primarily with the anatomy and physiology of plants and animals. Cells, structure, systems, and adaptations are a few of the subject areas. "Families" addresses the systems for classification of plants and animals. Observed characteristics are emphasized as a primary means for classification. "Neighborhoods" considers the interactions of living things with the world around them. Ecosystems, habitats, and biomes are introduced. "Circle of Life" features the daily survival needs of plants and animals. Plant and animal life cycles are detailed, including birth, growth, reproduction, and death. Scattered throughout "Living Things," you'll find hands-on activities related to the subject matter at hand. The activities are generalized with room for modification so that you can make use of the existing resource materials you may already have in your classroom. The activities are not provided as recipes; rather, they are designed to stimulate your own ideas for investigation. Frequently Asked Questions

Table of Contents About Meridian Resources Archive WebQuests in the Middle School Curriculum: Promoting Technological Literacy in the Classroom Kenneth Lee Watson University of Virginia "…technological literacy must include a wide range of opportunities for students to interact with a variety of tools and resources in order to develop a level of competence that will allow them to use technology effectively and productively in the workplace." Introduction O n January 27, 1998, the president's State of the Union Address (Clinton, 1998) included a ten point plan calling for, among other things, to "connect every classroom and library to the Internet by the year 2000 and help students become technologically literate." The president's focus on the use of technology in the classroom setting and promoting technological literacy among our students echoes the concern of many educators. Raizen, Sellwood, Todd, and Vickers (1995) suggest that technological literacy must include a wide range of opportunities for students to interact with a variety of tools and resources in order to develop a level of competence that will allow them to use technology effectively and productively in the workplace. Over the course of the last 20 years, educators have been inundated with new programs and methods aimed at integrating new technologies with classroom curriculum. Many discussions have centered around attempts to determine the most effective uses of technology in the classroom. From these discussions additional questions continue to be generated. How can we harness this technology for educative purposes? How can this technology enhance middle school education? What are the most effective approaches to integrating technology with curriculum so that it provides the greatest benefit for students?

2. Main Activity: Epidemiological Map

Basic Activity: Define Your Health
This first activity is very general and does not need any back-up materials. Have fun with it.
Goal
To define health in a comprehensive way
Objective To gain a concept of health that goes beyond illness to encompass a healthy state of mind and being Note: To do a shortened version of this activity skip the following steps: A(5), A(6) and B A.
  • Start with a discussion: ask if anyone in the class has ever fallen sick. Chances are everyone will at least have had the flu. That is something worth noting as it creates a sense that such a personal experience is also a common, if not universal, one.
  • Then ask the class, or a few students, to mention some of the illnesses they have had, including how they felt.
  • If no one mentions things like broken bones or injuries ask about them. Are these also health problems?
  • Then broaden it even more: apart from illnesses and injuries, have there been other moments when students have "not been feeling well"? Ask them to describe some of these.
